I took Amtrak from San Francisco to Chicago two years ago. It was amazing. You will relax for sure; there is no way you can stay stressed for two days straight! It's fun to meet new people on board, too.

I vote train!

Thoughts?

Train is definetly less stress than driving and it has been early most of the last 4 weeks.

for Chicago enter CHI and 49 or 449 to see the ontime performance
for San Francisco enter EMU(Emeryville bus to San Francisco) and 5 to see the on time performance.

A qucik check shows only coach seating available from Chicago yo San Francisco next week.

Its a great trip especially climbing out of Denver into the Rockies.

I am leaving on October 31st for a trip around a large chunk of North America.

Syracuse to Chicago to Los Angeles to Seattle to Vancouver to Toronto and then home. I did the California Zephyr in 2004 and it was great.

I love driving across country, however you are approaching the edge of what is safe to go through the Rockies without worrying about snow.
Take a more southern route, it will be boring (I HATE driving through New Mexico) but you can get there without issues.
