I'm just curious.

I'd not mind contributing to the project.

I work in a lab full of PIII's that nobody pays a whole lot of attention to. Actualy, it's my job to pay attention to them.

What would be the best way to run SETI@home without it being very visable?

The CS lab across campus is setting up a 50 node beawolf cluster to run over xmas break, and i'd at least like to give them a run for their money.

The rest of the library building just switched over to a citrix envoirnment, so i don't know if it would be practical to run it on those machines or not. If i could, it would be 400+ PII's.

I think that would be fun if I can get the support.

 
We'd love to have you, if you can get a higher up's permission to install the client on all those machines. There must be someone that you report to? Get their OK and we'll have you up and crunching in no time. 😀

If it's SETI you want to run, I'll see if we can get some specific help for you.
Currently, I'm running the Dnet projects (RC5 & OGR) and give you gobs of info with that.
With that many machines, you may want to consider running the Dnet client AND the SETI GUI client in the blank screen/screen saver mode. That way you are still crunching when a user is actively using the machine, and SETI will become the priority process when the machine is not in use.
Both of these programs can be installed where the users don't know that they are even there.

The easiest way to run Seti@Home hidden is to use the Command Line Client ("i386-winnt-cmdline.exe") in combo with SetiLog. What you do is put the Command Line client and SetiLog files into the same directory then create a shortcut to SetiLog and customize it with different switches depending on your needs. I use both of these programs and monitor them with SetiWatch (on the same page as SetiLog).

I'd be more than willing to help you get your P3's up that you're responsible for. As far as the rest, like others have said, get permission first. If you want me to give you a hand with your setup just let me know. I'll try to check back here but give me a Private Message in case I forget.

If you are set up in a Citrix environment, then even more reason to get permission and start cracking, because the Citrix server will take the brunt of application processing, and only screen changes, mouse movements, and printing go back and forth, reducing the CPU load on the individual PCs, which means more CPU cycles for distributed processing! 😀

I saw my work herds output increase when our heavy apps were moved to a Citrix server! 😀

I agree with Robor. SETILog is the easiest way to go. If you get permission, just put the SETILog shortcut in the startup directory and go. Alternately, since that method won't run SETI unless someone is logged in, there are special tricks to getting it installed as a service...

If you're interested in the service route, let us know. I've done it before (though I'll have to scrounge up the files necessary) and I know others have done it, too. Someone may even have a quick-n-dirty walkthrough somewhere...

A quick and dirty walkthrough sounds good.

Should this become a complicated task, other people might actualy take interest in what I'm doing and try and get themselves listed in the stats or form their own team or somthing. I'd rather have it all under once account, preferably mine, just to see how much can actualy be crunched while the machines are not in use.

I'll talk to the building network admins today to find out how many machines they will let me play with.

The week before classes start we're re-ghosting everything with 98SE, since we're still on 95 on most of the machines.

Higer-ups are keen on the idea of a large-scale distibuted computing project, but obviously want to enter the university on its own.

I'm now of no help to team anandtech aside from the client i've got running on my gf's imac.

I can honestly say that I know how you feel, though! A little while ago, jlytle and I were all set up to get the ~250 computers in our company running SETI, but the system we were going to distribute it will (SETI was just going to 'ride in' on the system) doesn't seem to work properly, and we can't go around and install the client manually due to some silly company policies... Maybe I'll have to go assimilate your lab, and you can come get our company systems!? 😀
 
Of course, you might be able to persuade the school to enter the SETI program as a 'mini-team' under the Team AnandTech banner. That way, they would still be working as a team for the school, but they would also be a part of a bigger team that is in a significantly high position in the standings, and would in turn help our team to get to an even higher position! 🙂
 
Yeah, you could just set up one account for your entire school. Then just join Team AnandTech with that account. I'm sure you'd be one of our top producers if you managed to do that. 😀
 
Excellent idea! Seattle Pacific University is one of TA's largest RC5 contributors at #10 overall, see our TeAm Dnet RC5 stats page.
You could name the University as the "real" or "nick" name, and use your own university email address on the Seti account. After all, someone has to be the team contact, and it looks as though you are the logical one.
It would be a shame to let all that CPU power go to waste if you can't get them to go with it though.
