How should boots feel underneath the foot?

I've been wearing Timberland Pros for years, and they feel flat underfoot. Flat may of course be a misperception, but it's the sensation I get from my feet. When I stand, my weight rocks back into the heels, if I balance onto the balls of my feet, it feels like the heel is extremely light, even off the ground. Again, possibly a misperception. Side to side motion is almost non-existent, they seem very stable.

I just tried a pair of Magnum (Stealth Force II), and they remind me of the Kodiak snowboots I had for a while. It feels like there are two balls underfoot, one towards to the front of the heel, and the other under the ball of the foot. It gives the sensation of being able to rock weight around easily, especially side to side. They walk quietly, and don't seem to encourage walking hard on the heels so much. I felt a little more pitched forwards in these, as opposed to rocked back with the Timberlands.

Is there something I should be looking for? Is that two pressure point sensation from the Magnums considered good, like the idea about walking/running on the ball of the foot instead of the heel? Considering I wear boots year round, it seems worth getting a healthy pair and, if necessary, learning to adapt.
