How safe is ebay?

I've noticed that lots of kids have been getting burned on ebay lately. Buying electronics online through ebay, in my opinion, has been getting less safe every month. Especially when paypal is involved. What tips do you have for buying electronics on ebay to help prevent bad transactions. What things are there to look for and how would you evaluate a product?
 
i'd buy from someone who has a lot of positive feedback in BUYING, and preferably, if you can, look at the feedback history and make sure that the person has already developed a good reputation selling similarly priced electronics.
 
check ratings....just because they have 50 100% feeedback, make sure it is not just from buying...make sure he/she has good selling reputation also.
 
And whats the deal with paypals buyer protection? They say up to 5000.00, but that doesnt cover if anything is wrong with the item. It only covers sellers who steal your money and run.
 
feedback should be the best way to know if the seller is reliable
I would suggest at least buying from a seller who has 10 feedbacks
thats a yellow star to start off
 
make sure there is a return policy then,
get one from a powerseller that has an ebay store

that should be pretty safe
 
honestly, my experience with paypal hasn't been so good
as a buyer, I paid for an item. and the seller did not ship.
So I filed for no item received after payment.

but to my suprise, I only got back about 60% of the value I paid.
then paypal says.. "we regret this experience and will do our best to solve this matter"

yeah right like it was ever solved.. so I lost over $200 there

as a seller,
I got scammed $560 dollars from a Brazillian for shipping to an unconfirmed address,
got a credit card chargeback and paypal say there is nothing they can do about it.
Since I took the risk to send it overseas unconfirmed.
I had prove of tracking number. But they said that it must have a signature confirmation
Which USPS do not offer.

fact is, you can never get a confirmed address outside the US and Canada
while they encourage you to list your items worldwide
Very contradictory.
anyway both as a seller and buyer, I have lost money that way

PAYPAL can be an @$$ sometimes

come on, if you're gonna do foolish transactions like that don't be surprised when you get burned.

Yeah.

I've been there though.

The money at hand looks pretty good.. you just got to step back and take a breath. Protect yourself and do what's best for you... this can ALSO be what's fair to the buyer....

probably not, unless it was a power-seller with an extremely high rating (+500, at least 95% positive) and the LCD was advertised as new.

if it's being sold as used, who knows what you'll get in terms of dead pixles.
 
Don't just look at the # of feedbacks, look at how recent the feedbacks are, what the auctions were, and if want, email the seller and see how fast they reply.

honestly that is the first credit card charge back that i ever got in my 300 transactions that I have done.
and the chargeback only occured 30 days after payment was sent via paypal.
