How reliable is the IPOD Video vs Nano?

I asked the question about the reliability of the Nano because a friend told me they are very fragile. He says they are so thin they break easily.

Is there any truth to this?

Its as good as a memory stick
If you drop a memory stick, it wont get hurt
The thing is the screen more or less

Also, you can just give your daughter an iSkin and stuff with the nano and even if she steps on it, it'll be fine

Get her the nano especially if shes atheltic

I have a nano and it does not seem anymore fragile than my friends regular ipod. I would get an Iskin or a case to prevent sratching but that is the same for any ipod. Personally I think the nano is great. It's light, small and has no moving parts.

no more than any other player that size i bet. just get a nice rugged case for it, leather/rubber or whatever, theres plenty of selection. flash memory more rugged than harddrive thats for sure.

Because the video iPOD depends on a spinning hard drive, compared to flash memory in the Nano, it is much more likely to fail after any rough experiences.

My daughter has had 3 hard drive failures over the past 3 years.

Does she run with it? I see countless people around here running with HD based mp3 players, which I would never recommend doing.

Yes, she runs with it every single day. I'm sure this played a big part in the frequent failures. She's now getting a small iPOD Shuffle to use during her runs and will try to treat her regular iPOD with much more delicacy.

Live and learn. <g>

I was at Best Buy a few days ago and picked up the 30GB video. I went in to get the 4gb nano but they were out of them but had the 30gb video for $30 more so I bought it. But i'm dissapointed to learn after reading this thread that they are bad for running because thats what I got mine for, well that and work. Is it a proven fact that its bad or common sence. I'm kind of mad now. Any info would be great, thanks.

"bad for running" as in it skips? I have a friend who takes his iPod w/ him EVERYWHERE, running, mountain biking, etc and have never heard him complain.

re: Nanos being fragile
When I initially got mine I'd heard all types of horror stories and it sure seemed like it could snap in two just by looking at it funny so I treated it w/ kid-gloves.. I finally found a case for it (rubber sleeve kinda thing) and now take it pretty much everywhere I go. With a decent case it doesn't seem anymore fragile than any other player out there. I love it.

Is this an iPod VIDEO or a Nano that your friend has??

I have a Nano. It's pretty tough - heck there's that review at Arstechnica where they throw it out of a car at 60mph and then run over (3 or 4 times as I recall) and it's still working. ( http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/nano.ars ). But it does scratch too easily. I still wonder what Apple was thinking with the coating that they put on. My mother had it in her pocket and it got scratched by the earbuds.

As far as reliability - it's really down to flash-based memory vs. hard disks. Hard disks have a rotating disk and a read head that is riding on a cushion of air, a sharp acceleration (like dropping it) while the head is on the platter can cause damage. Flash based memory is based on electron storage on a material that is embedded in an insulator - they have a limited number of write cycles - although nowadays that is up in the 300k-5million writes so that it's not much of an issue (reads aren't a problem).

Here's an article comparing the reliabily of the two for "embedded applications" (of which MP3 players would be one). http://www.embeddedintel.com/display.php?article=53

If I were buying an MP3 player for jogging or mountain biking, I would get a flash-based one. If I were buying one to take in the car or use at work, I'd get a hard-disk based one.

Thanks for the link PM. I think im just going to get the extended BB warranty on it and use it like I want. I want to use it when I run, and I'm planning on getting a car CD player with AUX input in it. And a bunch of guys have the Nano and Video at work and they use it all the time so I'd like to use it there as well. I just ordered a skin for it but i'm sure thats not going to help if its droped. Thanks again for the info.

My dad got an ipod video and i can't stand it, stupid for apple to release it without an actual program for converting most of the file formats that video uses. It was a pain in the ass to put a dvd on it. I wouldn't buy one.

well i'm not having any issues converting movies to the iPod format. If thats his only gripe then i'm not worried. I'm just wondering how it will be for running.

For playing songs it runs fine, took it on a road trip and it never skipped once, it was sitting on the dash, we went out back country steelhead fishing and it took the back country roads with out a single skip or blurp. Maybe your friend has a bad version of the song, or it compiled wrong.

Ehh, if the person is running with it, get a Nano since its based on flash...

You can't really trust HD based players if you are very active with it.

Well I got a really good deal on the 30gb video, i'm just wondering if it will be ok for running.

they both have their downsides...the nano can still get screen damage with a rubber shield. my friend had one in her backpack and it was put down with the nano side down and the screen cracked

My sister dropped her nano and it split open the case, slightly blemishing the plasic in the process. 😕

Then my GF smashed the thing with her fist, and it magically fixed it. :Q

Maybe that will tell you how reliable the nano is. 😉

I wouldn't dare do that to my ipod video. 🙂

BTW they both scratch *very* easily.
