The car has about 70,000 miles on it. How reliable would you say the car would be if I had it for about 3 years?

Maintain it properly and don't beat it to death and it should be just fine.

Piece of crap.

It's going to rust. Badly. The VQ has to be one of the most notoriously unreliable engines ever made. :(

Just about all Jap and american cars will be as reliable as the owner wants them to be. If the last owner took good care of it and you do the same, then you should be OK.

Just check to see if it has a timing belt? I can't remember what year they went from belt to chain. If it has a belt it with the water pump will need to be replaced as soon as you get it.

i think it is the newer design because the chassis looks relatively similar to the 2001 and 2002 models. I was just wondering if anyone had any firsthand experience with a 2000 maxima that had over say 100,000 miles on it.

Maxima's are extremely reliable, one of the most reliable in its class.
In all seriousness, you could floor that thing at every light and it'll still run strong.
There are a ton of Maxima's with well over 200k miles and counting.

At 70k miles, that Max isn't even near its half life yet.
and seeing this is a 3 year old car, that should mean most are highway miles (low rpm).

Madd Indian and Skoorb will come in and tell you all about it.
