saw one for a really nice price on craigslist with 127k miles. I heard the 90's ones use chrysler engines , and thus have reliability issues .. :( . i dont much about eclipses except they have less modifiable parts than civics and they cost more to fix?

they are generally ok in terms of reliability i think. but, it's still a 13-year old car so don't expect much from it.

I almost got a gsx. Sweet car, nice style, and definitely moddable--though not as popular as a civic for instance. New BOV, boost controller, and a cat-back and you're set.

If you come in expecting Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla reliability, you're in for a big surprise. They turbo versions are abysmal as far as reliability goes. It was the main thing that dissuaded me from getting one, nice looking, excellent performance but if horrible need for repairs.

DSM sayings thread:
"You might be a DSMer if...
2=If you have a garage full of spare engines, just in case.
5=If you have a running tab at the local tranny shop.
10=If people recognize your car by the sound of it's lifter tick.
12=If you get refused on your tread wear warranty every time you have tried, because of poor alignment.
26- if you think your dsm should have come with a flatbed/tow truck following you from the factory.
28=your car spends more time being broken than being driven
30=you spent more fixing it than it cost
And those are just a few...

I bought a mits eclipse last year '98 rs. I haven't had any problems with it being it has 80xxx miles. Though it practically is a dodge neon, it has the same engine, trans...well about every part except for visual aspects. The car has a 420a engine which is way under powered and slow...but very reliable.

I had a 93 awd talon for 5 years, probably one of the most reliable cars i've ever owned. The people who usually had them break down were the ones abusing them to no end.
"What do you mean i shouldnt launch the car at 7000rpm..."

generally i think all of them have oil leaks that cant be solved. I know plenty of stock and modded ones. they always fixing oil leaks and etc. but never buy a modded one because its just a world of hurt.

I actually bought a 1st gen GSX (1990) I had to replace the clutch at 30K and turbo at 60K but I learned how to drive a stick in a very hilly part of town and also abused the crap out of that car ie not letting the turbo warm-up/cool down properly.

It was a blast to drive and I imagine if I didn't treat it like shit it would have been reliable transportation.

I had a 95 GST and a 97 GST Spyder, loved both cars.

But the non-turbos are slowish.

When I first bought the car, everyone said it was a chick car, but really I mean if you look at it today ('98 year) it looks pretty modern and sleek. The only thing i dont like about is the rear bumper but other than that, its quite nice.

Well, if one breaks you always have 95 others to choose from. :p Trouble is, where would you keep them?

I had one. Bought it new. One day the engine was burning through a quart a day. No idea why or where it was going. I traded it in. Had it from 96-02 I think.

I had the Dodge version of this car, the Avenger twice, first one was 95 2.0l 4 banger with a 5 speed, one of my fav cars that I've owned, 40 mpg running from Ohio to Canada at 90 mph. The second, a 97 Avenger ES, with the leather V6 and automatic was the worst car. Suffers badly from the Dodge automatic transmission syndrome.

If you're looking at one, the 2.0 5 speed is just fun, and sickenly good on gas.

when you type in "crank walk" into google. guess what you get. nothing but eclipses and talons. thats a sign of something bad in the making.

The avenger is not a Eclipse...
It was the Mitsu Eclipse, Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser

The Avenger was Dodge's version of the 3000GT, wasn't it?

I wouldn't buy a 2nd generation Eclipse myself. Simple fact of life is that DSMs break. A lot.
