This one

I don't need one that's totally silent...just quiet enough so I can hear outside when I sleep at night (computer is in my room).

How loud is your current machine? It shouldn't add that much onto what's there, maybe 1-2 db. I wouldn't worry about it, both of the fans now are probably around 20 db, which shouldnt be more than you have now if you can hear outside when you sleep at night currently ;)

I want my machine to be as quiet as those cheap a$$ Dell machines.

I'm going to upgrade to a P4 1.8a (no overclocking) with 2 hard drives and 2 cd-roms.

Right now it's not loud since i have a retail AMD heatsink w/fan, 2 case fans, and 1 PSU fan. However, I can still hear the hum of it. Once I turn the machine off it suprising how quiet everything is.

I dunno if 320w is enough for a P4

When you buy this upgrade, it's not going to be the PSU that's the loudest thing, if you have all that. I wouldn't worry about it, if it says it's silent than it can't be too loud. I have a relatively quiet PSU, but that doesn't matter since I have a 5000 rpm fan on my HSF, 5 identical 32CFM case fans, dual cd-rom's, dual hard drives...

I probably would be able to hear outside if my comp was on overnight, since it's across the room.

I say don't worry about it! Other things will be louder, and your PC is only as quiet as the loudest part ;)

I didn't know which is why I threw that in there. No need to roll your eyes ;)

I disconnected all my case fans and the nothbridge fan and the PSU was the loudest component. Since I need to upgrade I just as well get one which is halfway silent.

read above ;)

I can see into the future; yours, particularly.

Being that you started this "noise related" thread, you are on the road towards trying to create a "silent pc." Trust me, it happens to the most avid overclockers, gamers and number crunchers among us. :) When you start out, you know that "cooler is better." So, you have four, 3,500 rpm case fans and a 7K rpm monster on your CPU HSF.

Then, one day, you snap. ARGHHHH! I hate this noise! I can't sleep! In fact, I can't even talk on the telephone while in the same room as my PC!!! ARGH!:|

And so the quest for the silent PC begins. If you want to see the "poster child of the silent PC quest", just look for any thread by Leo V. That guy hates noise more than I hate my son's mother, which says a whole lot. He has done some really gutsy things in the quest for the silent PC. Not the least of which is hacking a $300 video card to pieces....but I digress.

You will eventually find out, as I did, that the loudest thing in your box is the fan on your videocard. While only a 60mm fan, it spins at what sounds like 45,000 rpm. :(

I have swapped out the 5K rpm max thermostatically controlled fan in the PSU for a 2K rpm fixed-speed one. That dropped the noise level by 3db, which is actually a big difference. YOur "silent" PSU already has the quiet fan....but then again, "noisy" and "quiet" are very subjective things.

Didn't mean to get too OT...good luck.

MichaelD - not only did you see into my future but you saw into my past :Q

My friend and I were trying to get the coolest computer around. I had a screaming Black Label Delta on my 1.4 AXIA Athlon with 3 case fans and a new blue orb that took about 4 hours to get on. Everything was cool but the noise was terrible!

So the quiet computer was now the cool thing, with cooling being an afterthought. I've disconnected my notherbridge fan and only have 1 case fan running now (thought it was 2, guess not). The video card fan is there, I think, but I can't hear it..............yet.

I'm looking at getting a PC Power and Cooling 350W PSU from the FS/FT forum right now. Hopefully things work out.

The Antec True Power PSU's are silent, I've built 3 computers using them and they made no noise at all.

Omg, you're so right on the money I'm freaked out. I thought I was alone ;>

Just posted that thread yesterday. My personal search for the "holy grail" of silence is just beginning! Maybe some of you guys who've already taken the journey to its end can help me out here.

I'm running a P4 1.8@2.4, 2 HD, DVD, CDRW all on a 300w Antec PP303x.

No eye rolling here.

I don't have any experience with that PSU but it's hard to beat swapping out your psu fan with a Panaflo L1A,I did on my Enermax 300W & use it on a 1.33@ 1.45 with 2 7200rpm drives,1 burner,1 DVD player,2 case fans & an adjustable 80mm on my H/S.

The nice thing was,my L1A was able to plug right into the same header inside the psu as the old(louder fan) & it still retains the variable speed as the original fan. That setup has been running fine for about 7 months now. And as you can imagine it's nice & quiet
