i.e dimension 2400 vs self built amdxp2500 w/ nf7 in a sonata default hsf?

i can hear my machine whirring and my alarm clock tickin, driving me nuts

edit: so the cost savings of self built would be lost to go as quiet as a dell
(adding this and that orb)

VERY. I'm sitting right next to the Optiplex GX150 I have at work and I can't even hear it. If I put my ear right up against the case, I can just barely hear the slightest whisper of fans.

Well, it was loud because my Dell refurbished came with a POS hard drive that made it feel like an airplane was inside the PC. I replaced it with a Seagate HD and no problem since.

Optiplex GX260 and GX270 is virtually silent. I can actually hear an idle laser printer over a stack of 3 of them.

My brother has a Dell and it's so quiet, I can't tell whether it's on or off.

The Dell 400SC is quiet. But then it only has 1 fan in the entire system, and 1 hard drive as shipped.

Default chipset fans are notoriously loud, because they're small and usually cheap. You'd probably need to replace the default hsf (among other things) if you want a quiet self-built.

Your basic noise sources are case fans, chipset fans, hard drives, and PSU. Check out silentpcreview.com for more info.

my dell's fairly quiet, but i'm sure i could hand-build quieter. i'm thinking about replacing the motherboard on my system, and going to a new case. then it'd no longer be a dell ;)

i mean i thought the sonata would take away most of the noise

i forgot the damn visiontek ti4200 card's loud too, got a fan on it (the antec psu w/ the sonata is quiet)

what do u guys recommend for a fanless gaming card?

i can't even tell if it's on or not unless I look at the power button.

Ask Walleye. I'm sure he can tell you how to fabricate an air duct to the CPU and video card, that will be cooled by a 120mm fan. Piece of cake!

They're super quiet but I bet the airflow in and out of them is pretty poor. Dell owners don't care anyway, haha.

My Dimension 8300 is very quiet, when I boot up my second rig, a self-built P4/Antec/Sunon etc. rig it easily drowns out the whisper from the Dell. I love the silence ...

The little 60mm (and smaller) fans that they stick on video cards, CPU's, and northbridges from the factory are high-revving little bastards that typically whine and scream (relatively speaking) to generate whatever CFM they can. The few Dells I've looked inside are quiet in part because they do not have these fans at all. Specifically, on their current barebones P4 server, 400SC, they engineered a system-level cooling design with a single exhaust fan and a shroud over the CPU heatsink.

The topic is about quiet PC's, and adelphi apparently wants a quiet PC -- addressing the noise level of some or all chipset/CPU fans in the system is not only perfectly legitimate, it's probably necessary if Dell is the standard for noise that adelphi wants to meet or exceed in a self-built computer.

They're too quiet. I just got my mom a 2400 for Christmas and it's a little unnerving. By comparison I've got a Tornado and 4 80mm Sunons in my rig :p I guess I've just gotten used to hearing my computer :D

They're really quiet based upon any time I've worked on them. I've worked on about 5 to 10 of them so far, and yes, they're usually always quiet (I'm talking about the regular tower units, not the omniplex or anything like that)
