How promising do you think Lindows will be?

I have read and heard much about the soon release Lindows operation system.
As many of you might already know that it is basically a Linux OS that will run both Linux and Windows applications.
However, I doubt that it will run the Windows applications smoothly though. Isn't this smiliar to an emulator? Emulating Windows enviornment under Linux. Therefore declining the efficiency of the entire system.
But I guess that if they can make the GUI as slick and user friendly as Windows, then it might be worth a try.

It's not like an emulator. An emulator (like in the sense of Snes9x and Bleam and such) has to emulate the processor, graphics chip, and lots of other hardware. Since you're running on the same hardware, all that needs to be implemented is an API compatibility layer (no different than WinNT and Win9x being able to run the same programs, it's just that MS knows their own API better than anyone else). Lindows implemented correctly has the potential to run Windows programs just as fast as MS Windows (or even faster, though I'd say this is highly unlikely). This about all they'd have to do though, as I'd say that KDE (which it looks like they're using by default) is already slicker and just as user-friendly as Windows' GUI.

No it's not. It can run SOME windows applications.
It's just another linux distribution using wine (see codeweavers.com/winehq.com for more info about wine).

<< However, I doubt that it will run the Windows applications smoothly though. >>

It wont.

<< Isn't this smiliar to an emulator? Emulating Windows enviornment under Linux. >>

An emulator EMULATES something (duh) while wine (or lindows if you want to use the entire crap os) runs the apps instead of emulating them.

Not true. Only the windows apps you run are unstable, in fact even more unstable than under windows.

<< But I guess that if they can make the GUI as slick and user friendly as Windows, then it might be worth a try. >>

LOL!!!
You obviously don't know the linux GUI.
Also, it doesn't use the windows GUI, it just runs windows apps.

Just do this:
Go to linuxiso.org and download mandrake.
Or go to a computer-shop and buy 'SuSe7.3'.

SuSe is one of the best linux distributions, though it isn't free.
You can do an ftp install but therefore I suggest you to have *some* linux experience.

Mandrake is a userfriendly distribution, but it's crap.
It will work, but certainly NOT show you the beauty of linux.

I believe its using more than just wine. There are some proprietary parts if I understand these things right.

Maybe.

It is too. It is as free as any other GPLed project.

I disagree. I dont use it, but it is not crap. Ill take this as your opinion and let it drop though :)

I am personally looking forward to playing with lindows. It should be interresting although I have no need for it.

Me too, and me too.

The whole thing is quite exciting in the fact that someone is willing to put their neck on the line and go up against MS. If he inspires just one or two others to do the same, then he (Michael Robertson) has done a good job in my eyes.

No it's not.
Lindows

Read here and learn a bit about what they are doing.

The fact that you're all a bit cynical about this is one reason why it has the potential to flop. If you all opened your eyes and your minds a little you would see that the quality of this OS is only half of the job. Facing a monopolised market with an unproven product takes guts. So don't throw something away that you have never even tried yet, that would be close minded and arrogant.

I agree with CSFM...they are breaking new ground in a market dominated by one company. That alone is an accomplishment...wait to see what Lindows is like before bashing it.
