How prevelant is the 512MB memory problem on the new NVIDIA Nforce2 boards?

I have bought 2 of the 512MB Crucial DIMMS and am getting ready to purchase my motherboard and CPU which was going to be one of these two.

EPOX 8RDA+
ABIT NF7-S

Can anyone tell me if they are experiencing these problems I have heard about on several forums with this memory on these motherboards?

I've heard of some issue where the memory performance will be quite low with 2 512 sticks. Perhaps it's only if you run them in dual channel though (which doesn't give jack for performance gains anyways).

I've never heard of any 512MB memory problems with Crucial or any other RAM in nForce2 mobos. Perhaps you're thinking of the no boot issue with Corsair TwinX and other LL memory modules in nForce2 boards as mentioned here

there is a problem with crucial when running 2 sticks of 512mb pc2700 on dual channel w/ onboard sound running at higher then 133mhz bus, especial if running clock timing at 2x2x2x6 or something similar.

I've never heard of this either....

I thought you meant having a stick of 1 gig of ram...either way it ____shouldn't___ (i'm not saying it isn't though) be an issue since it handles up to a3 gigs of ram.

There's a Long thread on this at the AlthonXP forums. Yes, there is a problem. Crucial has acknowledged it and Nvidia is working on a solution. None announced as of yet but lots of people are eagerly awaiting one. I've got 2 of these in an Asus A7N8X and occasionally get mem fail messages at POST. I cannot run beyond 133 FSB or the system gets totally unstable. I intend to wait a while for a fix but if one is not forthcoming I'll be calling Crucial customer service which is what they advised me to do when I emailed them concerning this. 🙁

Hey magomago

if you want to squeeze a little more performance out of your TB 1700 drop the mulitplier down to 9.5 and bring the FSB up to 200 MHZ I am running that exact setup with the A7N8X deluxe and I am reading as an xp 2400+

Yep, it's becoming apparent that the problem is also cropping up with Crucial PC2700 256MB too. Maybe not as common as the numerous problems with the 512MB sticks, but the deeper you look into this the more people are having problems with all Crucial PC2700 on Nforce2 MBs. It ranges from flaky performance to failing Prime to instant BSD whenever approaching 166 FSB. I've got $10 that says sometime soon Crucial is going to take the 256MB sticks off the list of memory guaranteed to work on Nforce2 boards. Any takers?

Hello,
the is an issue with the nforce 2 chipset boards and pc2700 512 memory modules, it is not the memory it is the chipset set and in some cases the memory can note be run at full 2700 speeds(333Mhz) and in some cases it works fine, this issue is just with the pc2700 512 modules and many of our competitors are haveing the same issues. For help resolving the issue with your Crucial memory module, please contact Technical support at 800-336-8896 (US and Canada only) or 208-363-5790 or e-mail crucial.service@micron.com <mailto:crucial.service@micron.com> <<mailto:crucial.service@micron.com>>.

Dunno about the part about their competitors tho. 🙁

well I tried out my roommates stick of 512mb crucial and it would NOT run stable on my system, even at 166fsb

you need the new bios for Corsair to run in the 8rda.... that is sthe board of choice for overclockers

I'm running 2x512MB Kingston PC2700 in dual mode DDR333 right now. I have yet to Prime95 the system though. Just put it together tonight.

No need, Prime95 and/or 3DMark2001SE have found problems. I can't match the o/c I got from the same gear on my 8K3A+. I was able to do 13x166 with the memory at PC2700 turbo and run Prime95 and 3DMark2001SE for 24 hours with no problems.

What should I try?

I"ve got the same problem with my 256 MB Crucial PC2700 modules. Get a Mem Fail at startup every once and again, and won't run at anything over 166 FSB.

if its the ram, try pulling a stick out (does it only affect 2x XXXMB configs, or ?)
