How organized is your computer?

My shared drive was very organized. Movies, docs, music, etc, all in their own folders with password protection. Then something happened and I can't get it to share right anymore. Been using Ubuntu for the past 2 days in my off time to try to get it all organized and all the rights worked out...

Organizing my PC ranks somewhere between cleaning the gutters on my house and weed eating the yard in "tasks I actually feel like doing".

I hardly ever save anything so I just leave My Documents as the default save to spot and delete things as I don't need them anymore.

most of my backed up data is pretty well organized. random shit...not so much, but if i want to keep it, i know where it can be found

Fairly organized - games in the "Games" folder on each drive, all music in Music folder, downloads in Downloads, pictures in Pictures, torrents on the external. No icons on my desktop - I use the start menu for everything except what's in my quick launch.

My server has six TB drives, and those are perfectly sorted. Then there's another 250GB drive in there that I sort out to the TB data drives every few months. The contents of the 250 are just thrown in there, and it'll take a day's work to sort. My main computer holds next to nothing for data.

I'm sure it' 6 TB of Linux Distros, right? 😉

remember, sharing is caring

Yep, all Linux.

If sharing is caring, I'm gonna be the next Mother Teresa. 😛

My pc is a ridiculous mess. I install everything into the default directory, all my download programs are set to save downloads into different folders (however, most are my downloads folder) so I have to search for downloads sometimes. I install random programs that I don't ever use and never uninstall anything. The only time I will get rid of stuff is when I can't store/install anymore stuff and have 0gb left. I clear off my desktop when it gets full of icons which actually happens fairly often.

The only thing that is organized at all is my music folder because iTunes does it for me.

I'm waiting for Windows 7 release to clean it out and reformat.

Then Windows 7 comes out, and you delay yet again, for the next Windows form perhaps. 😛

I dual boot my mac pro with snow leopard and win 7 and keep both very neat. I desktop icons and do not show them in windows. In
osx I keep it clean also.

I view my network of computers as one big computer with a bunch of terminals. I not only have different folders for everything, but for my media I have different drives along with backups. Everything is in in order. Desktops are all uncluttered. I make great use of the quick launch to store icons instead of the desktop.

I do keep a "junk drawer" for things that do not fit neatly anywhere else, and go through every year or so to delete stuff that has lost its importance.

One thing that can help a lot is using a file manager in place of explorer in windows. I like ones like total commander or free commander that allow me to change the color of files based on the file type. So I have exe colored red, documents green, etc. I can glance at a folder and now exactly what file types are in it.

If only firefox had a 'tagging' system that you pre-define a certain file type that is associated with certain folders and it makes you 'tag' your file before you can save.

Sounds like you need The Magic Folder. Download your files into this folder and it will automatically move them to the appropriate folder depending on the file extension. Put all .exe and .msi files into an Apps/Uncategorized folder to sort later, throw .mp3 files into a Music/Uncategorized folder, put .avi and .mp4 files into a Videos folder, etc. It's not perfect but it's quite cool.

OMG sexy program....

i have 6 partitions (3 HDD) and it's still messy because I couldn't work out the right sizes and move the right data between them. Basically I have videos in 2 different partitions instead of 1 and so on...

I live off of my laptop. It is very organized and backed up regularly (Time Machine...and occasional full backup on home hard drive for extra security).

I keep all my media/data on my server, and have it very organized. Then, my pcs/laptop all have access to the main server media/data mount point as a Z drive.

I stopped caring about my computer half-way through college. Now it is a slow POS with shit cluttered all over the place. I hardly ever use it because I loathe the thought of sitting in front of a computer after spending most of my day in front of one.

I'm waiting for my delivery of the Win7 official upgrade package to re-org my computer. I have been using Win7 almost exclusively since ~May but when I installed it I installed it to a small partition alongside Vista and Ubuntu and am sharing data on another partition. When I have the Win 7 upgrade license I will be backing up all of my data to the Windows Home Server and then nuke my desktop and rebuild it with a new partitioning setup and a complete re-org of my data.

iTunes organizes my music, I have a Folder for Downloads(anything/everything), when Installing a new Program I choose the most empty Drive. That's the extent of my Organizing. All Apps, Games, Utils I use have a Quicklaunch Link, so I rarely go directly to my Drives for anything.

Thats weird, unorganized in my opinion (installing programs to the drive w/ the most free space. If you have 5 drives/partitions, programs would be installed all over).
