How on earth do you clear the URLs visited in Internet Explorer?

I used Tools>Internet Options> then I Cleared History, Deleted files, and Deleted Cookies.

But when I go to File>Open> and begin typing a URL that I've been to that URL appears in the entry field after I've typed a few characters.

Any idea how to clear this too?

Thanks.

BTW, I did history search in IE and the URL is listed. I look at the Properties and it only has a General tab...the TYPE is "internet shortcut". But when I do a View by site...the site is not listed.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Tools -> Internet Options -> Content Tab -> AutoComplete button. Uncheck the box for "Web addresses" under "Use autocomplete for".

I tried that too. WORKED until I rechecked the button.

I trying to find out how to permanently remove all the URLs that are stored wherever in memory...Any idea how to clear that?

Not yet. I just wanted to find out if there is some other way....I don't know for sure if PowerToys or X-Setup will erase these.

If you are trying to permanently remove files from your cache and history, you need a 3rd party tool. Hit up Google for cache and history cleaners.

Thank you.

I find it amazing that a user can't get into/find where these URLs are cached and edit/delete them.

Click on Start, then Run.
Type "regedit" in the box provided.
In Regedit navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Typed URLs
Then just delete all of the keys that list the URL's you no longer want to see.

There were not any URLs in that 'folder'.

rnmcd, you may want to download TWEAKUI for your OS -

It does stuff like this automatically and has a great assortment of tweaks for diff windows versions

I wonder why this didn't work...are the URL's hidden or cryptic?

The odd thing about it is that I use Win NT at work and if I go through Tools>Internet Options> then "Clear History", "Delete files", and "Deleted Cookies" the URLs do get erased...but I can't get this to delete them in my Win XP Pro system.

You can decrease the amount of memory that IE can use to store URLs and other data to a really small number. You can also set the automatic delete schedule to every day I think or every reboot. So if you leave the computer on you will probably have to remove the history by hand, but I am pretty sure there is an option that either doesn't ever save the URLs or doesn't save them after all instances of the browser have been closed. Keep looking around. Did you mention what OS you are having this problem with?

rnmcd, this one will work, open I.E. open tools, click internet options, click the clear history buton. U can change how many days you want you cache to remember by changing the days on that page.

I just did it and it worked fine for me. Let me know.

I've honestly tried that 20+ times...without success.

By the way I use Win XP Pro.

Try this:
after clearing out your History, click on History to open it then put the letter "e" or "a" in the "Search for:"

Does anything come up?

For me, every URL with that letter in it still appears even after I have cleared history, files, cache...

I run XP myself and it works fine, I have other problems but that's another story. Do you have the latest SP for I.E.?

I came back to edit this, try one more thing, Go to Explorer, selct your folder IN other words you will have All Users, Default Users and then probably your name or whatever you used when you set the program up (Xp) Clcik on Documents and settings and then you should see a file that says History. Select all in that file and then delete. But just out of curiosity, do you have admin rights on your computer? You may not be able to delete certain files unless you sign in as admin. You said your running XP PRo, well if that's the case then I think your beating your head up against the wall. You will need admin rights to do what your trying to do. I'm reasonable sure about this.
