I can't think of any state here in the US where the driving age isn't 16, but I heard that might change in some state. I may be wrong though. Anyone know different?

I was 15 when I bought an '84 Dodge Colt from my step-brother for $50. I was supposed to bring it in to the school auto shop to repair the suspension, but my friends and I drove it around illegaly until the plates expired, then I abandoned it in a parking lot. It was not a safe car, and I was a lucky fool, cause nothing bad ever happened.

I bought my first &quot;good&quot; car when I was 17. My Dad's '86 Dodge Omni. It wasn't too bad but the engine started to go at only 135,000 miles. Since then, I've had 11 Japanese cars, most with well over 150,000 miles each, and none with any engine troubles ever.

It was early June 1982, I was 16, the car....a 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass. It was Blue, baby moon rims and a killer am radio. I got it for $1,600 by working as a Paperboy and then at a Piggly Wiggly Grocery store.


I am now 34 and I still have it sitting out in the garage waiting for a Sunny day. Which might be a month or two.

14 - I bought a '47 Ford Pick-Up truck, in 1984, I'm not THAT old. I drove and restored it at the same time.

When I lived in Kansas, the age to get a leaner's permit was only 14. I think it has gone to 15 since I moved away.

I'm 25 now so I hope to get a car this year. Was looking at that nice and shiny pink '75 Yugo. Or it could be a faded red, but it's really nice, not too many holes in it, and only the two rear windows are busted. It's got no rear view mirror and only a left side mirror, but that's ok. Can't always have the best stuff in life.

I want a '75 Yugo cuz I was born in 1975. Match made in heaven!

17, 1989 silver camaro. Had it for 3 years then got a new civic, i can never go back. Camaro is a pos deathtrap car with no traction. It was also loud ugly, slow, had a speedometer that maxed at 85, and drank gasoline like there was no tommorow

I got a '94 Chevy Lumina when I was 19. I know I was a little older than most of you people, but I didn't have rich parents I had to pay for it on my own. Well at least talk my mom into co-signing for me. Heck I didn't even get my license until I was 18. Mom wouldn't let me get out of school to get them.

Garfang, it is changing in Florida. My kids will have to wait until they are 18, Buahahahahaha!

I was 18 when my parents bought me a gently used 1984 Honda Civic DX. That car served me and my family well until 1997. (edit: It was a BIG sacrifice for them to make, but that is the kind of people they are. I needed it, and they wanted me to have it. I certainly hadn't earned it.)

I will help my kids with their cars as well, but it will be because they show how responsible they are, not because it is some kind of 'right'. My best friend growing up went through a Mazerati and a couple of nice Toyotas before her father stopped bailing her out of trouble. She never did learn to appreciate anything, and last I heard she was disowned by her rich daddy, her kids got taken by the state, and she's dancing on skid row somewhere. I really believe you have to work to appreciate what you have.

Here in Holland we can smoke pot and drink alcohol at 16, but we can only get a drivers license till we are 18. I got my license for my motorcycle at 18 and got an old and restored Honda CB400F at that age. Great fun. Now im 2 m'cycles further down the road and driving a Honda CBR1000F. Weeeeeeeeeeeeee! Didnt get my license for my car till i was 24, and didnt get a car till 27 and that wasnt even mine. The only car i own is leasecar i got from the company i work for. Right now, its a 2000 Renault Megane Coupe Sport (mouth full).

(I wish cars werent so expensive here: the size of this car is comparable with a Civic, but i cant imagine a Civic costing the equivalent of approx. $25.000 there. Sigh...)

My gf has an aunt and uncle who are both very well off doctors and their 3 boys each received a brand new neon upon turning 17 (legal driving there), and they are now receiving a new car every 2-3 years. They are ridiculously spoiled but miraculously are not lazy at all. I do agree that working makes you appreciate things much more though because on the other hand a girl in my high school class had rich parents - her dad bought her a new integra when she graduated. Last I heard she was still very spoiled, lazy, and going no where in a hurry with her life.

Regardless of my wealth I don't see myself giving my kids a car unless they like it - beyond normal things I hope to make my kids work for what they want with the exception of education which I will be saving up for from the day they are born, because I don't want them getting out of university in debt...I kinda wish my parents made me work a bit more; I'm lazy - my younger brother is even worse though. He is god's almight example of laziness.

I agree that there are many different factors involved... Raising responsible kids is quite a job. My friend was beyond spoiled... she wasn't taught values. Bad combination.

As for mine, I am almost finished pre-paying for their college educations ( I chose the state plan, after carefully considering different options). For me to provide them with cars, they must get good grades in high school and go on to college. No good grades, no college, no car. A simple enough plan, I hope it works!

Cool - you should make sure your kids realize how great it is getting their education paid for. My mother paid for mine but only recently have I realized how much ass it kicks. I still have student loans from the post-grad diploma I got but my undergrad gave me no debt and I am extremely thankful!

I'm thinking with my kids I may give them some line like for every dollar they save up I'll give them 3-4 towards university so that they still have to work, but I will try hard not to have them come out with debt.

The first car I could DRIVE was an '81 Fiat Spider convertible at 27 when I finally got a license... loved that car.

3615buck It's different from state to state. I think as you head towards the more urban areas, the minimum age is higher. In New York City, I think it's 18. New Jersey is 17, but they are raising that to 18 soon. I heard in some rural areas, some kids get their licences at 15 or 16.
