Isla, it's wonderful to have caring parents. Neither of mine are wealthy in the least, but there's nothing they wouln't do for me or my sister if they could. Sometimes I wish I didn't have to work so hard while getting an education, so I'll try to save for my children's educations as soon as they're born (don't have any yet or any time soon.)
CAUTION: <RANT MODE: ON>
Regardless of how successful (or not-so-successful) I am in life, I'm quite sure I will never just buy a car for my kids and give to them without them earning it in some big way. And no 16 year old of mine is getting ANY brand-new car even if it's the cheapest thing out there. In my late teens, I worked at a restaurant in one of the richest suburbs of Minneapolis. Nearly all the kids that got brand new cars from their parents had them relatively trashed within months. One girl got a second brand-new car less than a year later because she didn't take care of the first one!
</RANT MODE: OFF>
The kids who drove one of the family "beaters" or their own used car and worked cause their parents wouldn't (or couldn't) pay for their toys 'n' things seemed to have a much more appreciative (and realistic) attitude about life.
