I've said it over and over again - some of the richest people I know personally, drive older cars. You don't get rich by buying a new Lexus/Mercedes every year, you don't save for retirement by buying things to flaunt your money with, the list goes on.
I have a friend that drives a mid 80's Subaru, knew him for ages and always kind of thought he wasn't as well off as the rest of us. Not a big deal, or even an issue at all, we're just friends hanging out. One day, I had to give him a ride home, and what do I see? A huge gated neighborhood that lead into a path of million dollar homes. Both of his parents are very successful in what they do. None of them drives an expensive car, unless Honda Accord's are considered expensive in comparison to their huge home. They had 1 Accord, 1 small Honda SUV (CRV?), his Subaru, and some older Toyota. In that neighborhood, I didn't see a single Hummer, Lambo/Ferrari/Porsche, etc.
I've also seen other neighorhoods like that where the huge driveway was filled with Jaguars and other expensive cars.
Ignoring the idiots posting, I don't think there are many people that show themselves as more than they really are. The fact is that a lot of people in the IT industry were at some point here, and still come on occasion. A lot of these people have done very well, and come here to just relax in the evenings. I'm not an industry leader or someone handling multi-million dollar projects, but I still like to come here in the evenings to relax. This is part of why categorizing things like car threads into a new forum bothered me - I liked the wide variety of topics with a technological focus, which I felt was lost when they started filing things in the cabinet.
Anyway, the basic points:
1. AT does happen to have a lot of successful people
2. People don't get rich by wasting money. You have to work hard for it.
3. The car a person drives or that you see him drive does not relate to his success. I know of neurosurgeons that have garages full of cars like special edition Vipers, Ford GT's, anything you probably saw on Top Gear, but also people that will have a similar amount of money and just drive an Accord.
