Well if my grandpas are any sign then I have a long time to go, my one just died last year at 91 and my living grandpa is in his 80's.

Risk takers generally don't grow as old - so all of you 120 wannabe's better stop using cell phones and other technologies that aren't proven, stop worrying about your 401K, start nurturing your spiritual side (even if you won't admit you have one), start eating right, and doing exercise. Or to put it bluntly, start living a rigorous rural lifestyle...

And stop posting here!

Unless you live in a highly polluted area, technology has minimal impact on lifespan.

It's mostly diet. A balanced healthy diet will keep your body's natural mechnisms to fight the oxidation of DNA healthier (oxidizing DNA = aging. Old people are withered and less defined literally because what defines them is disappearing.) Based on what people can eat today, the limit for the human life span is about 120 years.

Scientists have recently been screwing around with genes in rats and flies that fight oxidation. Killing the gene made them die prematurely from aging way before their time. Strengthening the gene made them live up to 2x longer. Not use longer, but biologically they aged slower.

I could see life extension in the near future. However, I think it's too late for us. It'll be a few more generations until people will benefit from it.

And I have technology to thank for the supplements I take. They allow me to get a huge array of nutrients that would be near impossible to get from food. I'd have to eat a little bit of every healthy fruit, vegetable, meat, etc.

As long as I can take care of myself, age doesn't matter. When I am no longer able to take care of myself, it will be time to go.

This thread reminds me of Dennis Leary's bit about smoking (wait, all his bits are about smoking :p) where gives an early grave as his reason for lighting up. To be honest... to me, "old enough" is the day before I turn senile/decrepit. :p As soon as I'm unable to do the things I love, that's it. :p

I think the life expectancy of Americans is 75. but most live past 80 if they don't get hit by cancer or a mental ilness. My greatgrandpa lived to 96, Greatgramma 92, so bam! in the face of LE numbers

Oh, yeah. The most likely scenario is that you have a pair of wires twisted together, and it just LOOKS like one wire.

After watching my grandparents die... and being old enough to know that 40 isn't the worst thing that can happen to you... I'm thinking 80 is a good run. My dad's parents were both pretty good till 80. It was after that when they started to break down. Most people in my family seem to be alright till 75-80.
