How old do you have to be to rent a car?

I am planning on taking a vacation, but am not sure whether I am going to fly, or drive. It all hinges on how old do you have to be to rent a car. I am 17 (will be 18 in September), and have 2 major credit cards. I have had my license for almost a year (will be one year since road test on June 30th), and have been driving for almost 2 legally (had driven before, but very limitedly, and on private property). Will I have to be 18, even though I am licensed, and have credit cards, or will they rent it if my parents rent it under their name for me?

I seem to remember hearing you had to be 21 to rent a car. Of course...you could always CALL a rental place and ask :p

I too have been wondering this... I think it varies agency to agency.... a buddy of mine and I want to fly out to cali and do the PCH for spring break in either a stick mustang or a 911turbo rented from an exotics place... money is no object and I have the same problem. not yet 21.

Probally have to be 18... you're still a minor and under your parents supervision.

Rental companies usually charge underaged drivers a lot more. (Less than 26 years old, usually)

The money isn't the issue. If they will rent it to me, I will pay it. I only need the car for around 1 day, to 1.5 days. It's a weekend trip.

Minimum = 18 with the exception of exactly 1 company that I know of, USACarTemps. AFAIK (and I did research and try) you can not even be listed as a driver, even if someone else rents. Of course, that was in 97-98 when I was doing all that research. (spent a good solid month looking) It would have been cheaper to buy a brand new car, and sell it a month later than what USACarTemps wanted for a month. ($580ish a week IIRC for a POS.)

99.999% of other companies = 24.

A national chain will NOT rent to you under 21 unless you are in certain states(NY comes to mind). Your best bet is to call EVERY rental place in the city or local area of where you will be renting. When I was 20 I was able to find a place in Atlanta that rented to 18+. This is rare, but they are out there.

Any place I've seen the rents exotics requires a significant deposit and that the driver be 25.

I know a lot of places around here do that.... thats such bs.... WHY??? we all know that age is the biggest determiner of maturity... if I carry enough insurance to replace a 911turbo (and I do 1.1million in total coverage + collision)... why cant I rent one?

I wouldn't be renting an exotic car. I am just looking for something to take me from point A to point B. The place I am looking at is Sandusky, Ohio. I plan to go to Cedar Point for the ATOT meet, but if I can fly, and then rent a car, it would be a lot nicer than driving.

Because your insurance will not replace it under certain conditions, which you will for sure (at least if I had a 911 turbo) be driving under/with.

I know, but Ive seen rental companies advertising mustangs as their "compact car option." All im saying is that I want that or a 911.... and this age thing drives me nuts...

Are you talking out of your ass? Why would you have that high of a coverage limit?

combination of the total policy that would be applicable to just the vehicle.... riders... colision... liability... trust me its all there.

I'd rather be molested by the insuance company and never have to worry about rate increases or getting sued b/c of something I did on the road. when the comapny is only liable for 25k, they dont send their best layers to bail you out... you take the tab for the rest. when they have over a million on the line... you get the best they have. Seen it go down with family and never want to be on the wrong end of it.

???

Everyone has limits of anywhere from 150k to 500k on Collision and Uninsured(if they are smart). The "total" of limits doesn't matter, and I can tell you are rather naive concerning insurance and finances. If you are going to rent a car as pricey as a Porsche Turbo, then you are going to have to have significant insurance coverage, or possibly be forced to buy theirs at a substantial rate. I'm sure a large deposit is required as is the age of 25, and probably a decently clean record. No company is going to rent a 911 to some "kids"

Companies I looked at online just a few weeks ago (explored idea of a move from OH to WA in a SUV or minivan rather than a rental truck) were saying you had to be 25 unless in MI and another state, where they'd charge you more.
