What I don't understand is how all these 20 thru 24 year old's on here "supposedly" earn over 60k a year? lol I call Shens on some of you!

With two B.S. degrees and a M.S. in computer science I qualify for jobs around the 65+k mark...so how do all you without degrees and with just an undergrad get hired for that and more? I handicapped myself by serving on active duty (Army) for a good amount of years first, but hell I hope to make good money like all of you someday. For all you big earners Congrats! Sadly...my wife makes and will probably always make more than me. But as long as I get to keep spending money its all good. ;)

Your situation is confusing. You are what I call the art spouse, except you are a man, which makes you only the second person I have ever seen in this position. What do I mean by art spouse? You ever meet those couples where the wife (and don't even get started, it almost always is the wife) is an aspiring opera singer, actor, or runs her own poodle charity? What do they all have in common? 99% of them don't ever make it and they make zero to negative money. So how is this possible? Well, they are always married to rich guys or guys that are willing to suck it up.

That's you. Except you are not doing art or painting or anything. You have VERY practical and useful and profitable degrees. Three to be exact. But let's dig deeper. Perhaps you are not artsy, perhaps you are the other type of person which is the lifetime student.

Three degrees, even with dual majors and an accelerated masters program probably took you 5-6 years. So while your peers were out getting experience on the job market, you were in school. And things were good.

Then after that, you went straight to the military. Again, your friends are now 25-26, 4 years at their jobs. Then after you got out, you went into research with no pay.

Your story is very common. You are not driven by money. You don't even want to make money. Why would you when your wife allows you to live your lifestyle?

Your group of friends changes over the years. I only talk to a few people I went to high school with, I'm more in touch with college friends. I make 50+% more than some of my college friends, but since they live in the midwest and I live in NJ it kind of evens out. My one friend makes substantially less than me, but just had a house built in Indiana for $120k. I couldn't touch a 100 year old house on a tiny lot for double that.

30 yo, around $30/hour (CDN) Possibly a large incentive cheque in December if things went well during the year, though this year it isn't going to happen :(

I do contracting work for a large computer storage firm. I work out of Huntsville, AL. My base pay is actually 85K with a 4K Car Bonus. Which just shows up as part of my base pay for tax purposes. I've actually been doing this kind of work for around 4, almost 5 years now. Though when I was a DoD employee I was getting paid peanuts as an E-5. ;)

you have to be lazy or a HS dropout to not make at least 75k by 20, or if you end up going to college you dont earn until 22, but start at around 100k

my work is a couple miles from my house and i live to bike to work, but have been taking a break and letting my hootus heal, keeps getting caught in the spokes.

my GF does modeling but only because she enjoys it, i wouldnt feel like a man if my SO had to work.

Good point.

The more I read and re-read, the more I realize that TTIWWJDAL (This Thread Is Worthless Without Job Descriptions And Locations). I'll lead by example and restate mine.

For the record, I'm 24 in MetroWest Boston area, and making right around $25/hr plus free broadband internet and phone (home VOIP via Vonage, by my choice) and before OT (mostly via oncall rotation). I do UNIX hw/sw tech support, with light consulting/training duties mixed in. By market standards I am underpaid but not only am I in a great situation manager-wise but I believe there are plans for salary adjustment soon.

I'll play along and restate mine too.

I'm 31 and am in the process of moving to Birmingham, AL. I'm am employed for 36.5k(+ full benefits)/year as an Assistant IT Manager for a growing company. I just graduated this past May and while my salary may not great for people my age, I'm not complaining. For a new graduate(MIS), I'm quite pleased to jump into the management side of things this soon after graduation. My wife is looking at biological science research jobs at UAB and has at least 1 interview scheduled. My salary + her projected earnings will make for a household income I am comfortable with for now.

So black and white...I'm 21 and make $6.50/hr, currently on my third year of my IT bachelor's degree.

Jeesh, I can't believe how many people didn't realize he was joking.

correct me if Im wrong but, dont Ibanking folks make alot but also work alot? Like 80+ hours a week? So even if they made $100,000 there basically making the same as somebody that makes 50,000 a year working 40 hours per week? Some things I realized is that some companys really work you for what they are paying you. My colleague at MS is constantly working.... during work hours... after work... he's always loaded with stuff to do.. me on the other hand, I just come in at 8am leave whenever I want to (depending on my work load) then just relax at home and stare at the wall for hours.... is it really worth working your self to death to make that much more pay?

lol if this thread was hooked up to a bullshat meter the mofo would explode ;)

$35/hour at 20 would be rare, but not that far-fetched. He could be a contractor working off experience rather than a college degree.

You are correct, most high-paying jobs expect a lot out of you. They don't pay you $150k a year to post on ATOT at work.
