How often does your computer freeze up while hot swapping a USB device?

I swap around a couple USB gamepad pro's, a couple different flash media readers and my MP3 player on a daily basis. I can't remember ever having any problems once i got them all set up correctly.

So what if I'm seeing sparks and or my system is freezing up after pulling out or plugging in an USB cable?

Are you using USB ports built into the motherboard (ie in the back of the computer) or are you running connections from headers to additional USB ports?

No problems here.

And sparks are a very bad sign. I'd check your motherboard and make sure all of the packer screws are in place and make sure it isn't trouching any of the metallic parts of your case.

Hmm, sounds pretty serious, I can't really think of anything that would cause that off the top of my head (besides the grounding problem which others have mentioned). Are you using externally powered peripherals (like scanners, printers, etc)?

Never. And I swap a fair number of things frequently.

I would believe that your ground is not put in the right place or your volts are switched on the motherboard + on - or vice versa. I'd definately recheck those connections as I'm 99.9% sure that's your problem.

Bill

Edit - Oh, you're using the USB Ports built in onto the mobo? Then I'm wrong ^^ But that doesn't make any sense! Unless the mobo mfg. messed up the pins (which I highly doubt) then uh.. well either way I'd get a new one!

Never, and you shouldn't see sparks. There are definitely other problems such as a loose ground, or bent
USB connector. Is it always the same USB port?

sparks? scary stuff. shouldn't be any lock ups either when switching usb devices maybe some stalls so the installation would take place but none that you described

My Dell Inspiron 4100 has 1 USB port. I share it with an HP printer and an HP scanner. It locks up about 40% of the time going from the printer to the scanner, but never the other way around. Running Windows XP SP1 with latest drivers for everything. I should just get a little powered hub, but since it's a work PC, I'm not too concerned.

Never. I regularly swap around a mouse, scanner, printer, flash card reader, SD reader, and occasionally MP3 player.

Never have I had any problems with hotswapping USB devices, but I must admit that when I saw this thread title I instantly thought of the video of Bill Gates demonstrating a pre-release Windows 98 setup with a USB scanner, and it BSODs right in the middle of the demo as he's hotswapping the scanner. :p
