my formula is to triple my cpu speed whenever possible.. so my first comp was 550mhz, then i got the 1800xp (alright i didn't triple it, but close enough), now im waiting on a 5ghz cpu...

i'm getting a little impatient so i might jump in for a 3000+ xp cpu

about once a year, if not sooner.

edit: justification....I do video editing, when speed costs low enough to significantly lower rendering times, I upgrade.

When games I like don't run on my computer, that's when it's time for me to upgrade. Currently I have a 1.4Ghz Athlon Thunderbird.

First computer I built was a K6-III 400 MHz. My motherboard sucked, computer crashed all the time, so I upgraded to a T-Bird 700 MHz. That got rained on, replaced it with a T-Bird 1 GHz. Eventually replaced that with a Athlon XP 2200+, which I'm using today.

I play the games everyone else was playing 2 or 3 years ago... I don't keep up on the latest and greatest, so it doesn't matter to me if they're outdated. I don't know any better. I don't play multiplayer.

I guess when I can double clock speed, or see a significant improvement.

I went from nothing, to 486, to Overdrive (83 Mhz PI equivalent. Hey, it played C&C and almost worked with Starcraft), to PIII450(decently rocking back when the Vodoo 3 it was paired with was fairly new), to XP2200, to PM 1.7GHz(my gaming days are mostly behind me, and I needed the portability).

My current CPU is about 25 months old now and not really any reason to upgrade it. It's pretty highly overclocked and wont last forever, I'll get a new one when it croaks.

I'd say, around two years.

Just for reference, I am currently using my 2.40C which I bought in July of 2003, and at 3.3GHz, it sure isn't outdated... heck, it's still faster than the $175 processors which retail to this day.

Here is my history:

1994: 133 MHz
2002: 1.8 GHz
2004: 3.2 GHz

judging my that... I estimate my next upgrade in 2007 or 2008.

I am currently upgrading my AMD XP's all to AMD 64 939 CPUs/Mobos. Whats nice about this is that my upgrades are costing me nearly nothing because Ive sold my stuff to build pc's for my friends.

Not for years :p

P133 to P3 500 then built a P3 650 for myself. Then years later P4 2.4Ghz @ 2.699. I've had the P4 for 27 months now. Running great imo for what I do. The P3 500 feels painfully slow at web browsing since I'm use to stuff working fast.

I REALLY wanted a 1GHz machine after the P133 BUT it was taking SOOO long for the dam thing to come out I couldn't wait :p

Next step won't be for ages. Not until the Pentium D gets settled and the software takes advantage of it. So maybe 18-24+ months later if I do upgrade.
