How often do you think you're smarter than your boss/manager/etc?

When it comes to programming and technical issues, every day. But to give her credit, I suck at non-technical stuff (i.e. requirements gathering for projects) and she is great at it.

Lately, never. Since I can never seem to understand their logic, it must mean they are smarter then me.

Example: Instead of purchasing the Veiwsonics I had suggested, they went with a no name brand since they were 7 dollars cheaper. They said things like refresh rates, response times, and "Brand Value" are just techno-babble to convince people to spend more money. (I work in a hotel and this was decided by a guy who thinks Intel and Microsoft are really the same company "since their products are always shipped together")
I had the same problem with printers.
We got a buttload of lame Lexmark multifunction inkjets. The whole line was crap to begin with. And our company purchased them after Lexmark stopped supporting the model.
We go through ink like mad and those cartridges are not cheap. So I ask the facilities manager if we can have have a nice little laser for all the massive print jobs around our office. Nothing special, just a cheap little HP LJ 1000 or something similar.

He said he didnt have the money right then, but I should remind him in a week and he would try to get it budgeted.

During that week, my boss decides (for whatever reason) that we need ANOTHER multifunction printer in his office, (which already holds two of those DAMN Lexmarks).
Sure enough, he intercepts the facility manager and convinces him to get another one. Only this one uses completely different ink cartridges. So now we have another crappy inkjet printer to scrounge supplies for.

Hmm ... I shouldn't answer this, as several of my co-workers will read this forum from time to time. So I'll just say, there is a possibillity that I may believe I might be smarter then my Team Lead, however, I believe he makes up for any lack of technical skill and/or intelligence with his wisdom and experience. He's certainly not a dumb man, but I don't think he's as intelligent as I am. But sometimes I am a cocky son of a bitch, and I do sometimes let things get to my head.

i find myself much smarter than many of my teachers, but i dont think some grammatical errors or typos here and there are any indication of stupidity. sometimes people make mistakes in a rush- this is especially true if the emails are merely casual messages...

I don't think I'm smarter than my current boss, but I do think that he is too laid back at times and doesn't take what I feel are obvious and simple preventative measures to keep problems from occuring. It's very frustrating to me because I'm always trying to think ahead. I'd rather prevent a problem than have the headache of dealing with it after it occurs.

Your boss still owns your ass by making X amount more than you. Thus, your boss pwns you, and you pwn yourself by being pwned by stupid boss.

Learn to spell "definitely" correctly, then we'll talk.

you people are really trying too hard

I'm talking grammar

and I always spell that word wrongly

Fixed. Nitpick 😉

And yes I knew I was smarter than my ex-boss - he lacked basic education, qualifications (outside food and drinks serving standards) and was generally a power-centric numpty. Mind you don't reallyexpect much from someone who in his 10+ years since leaving school had only made it as far as being a manager of a student bar.

I work at a credit union, definietly doesn't require any unique knowledge, the managers are managers because they have been here a long time and know the procedures.

The thing that bothers me is that they don't seem to have a basic grasp of the english language. Whenever they send out an email it doesn't take long to find a mistake. For example:

Just the other day one of them "missed placed her pen"

I've been out this week studying for finals, back in the office today and I get an email from my manager:

"I'm glad your back"

Glad my back what?

Idiots!

what is wrong with the boss missing you?

I keep getting lucky, my boss is slightly smarter than me, and a very nice guy. we are close enough to the same level to bounce ideas off of for out-of-the box thinking (IT&S people).

I've always seemed to get good bosses/managers.
