most phones seem to transition from one charecter to the next instantly. The only problem is if you want to type something like ABC. then you would have to hit 1, then wait, hit 11 then wait, then hit 111.

Unless it's on predictive text.....

she must have figured out how much predictive text to use for supercalifragilisticwhatnot and then practiced that pattern to get the timing down right.

If you are typing say an "a" and you want to hit "b" you can hit the right over arrow key and you can do it instantly instead of waiting

Yep... cell phone nubs in this thread :p

Neither do I. My girlfriend pretty much uses text messaging exclusively on her cell phone, but I don't use it at all, which irritates he hell out of her. I always call her back when she texts me about something.

Lemme try typing that and see how long it takes :p

After some tries to memorize the word I managed 19 seconds! What does that get me? :D

Because every generation before you has said the same thing about their succeeding generations.

That's got to spell pure profit for the cellphone companies - none of this BS of providing video streams to cellphones. The people want to send snippets of abbreviated text!!!!

<---- never sent a text message.
I do own a cellphone, but I use it so infrequently, I don't even know its phone number.

I would actually think sending a text message uses less bandwidth compared to voice data. Cell companies make a killing on text messages when people don't have a plan since they are so cheap for the company, but they charge 10cents+/txt (whether sending or receiving).

I guess I should have been more careful with my wording - the cost per byte for a text message is a few orders of magnitude greater for the consumer than the cost per byte for voice data.

10 cents per text - and a text might be what, a few hundred bytes? Voice data probably uses more than that in a second.

what i don't get is how she did it in 1 seconds. on my phone (nokia 3100) if you want to spell moment for example, you have to wait atleast 1 second after pressing 6 before you can press it again otherwise it turns into an n. but wow, 8000txt messages a month? i wonder what her bill is.

i have all my texts saved since 1/1/07 (...for no useful reason, other than that i can / am too lazy to delete)

1247 inbox
1646 sent

so... start>run>calc-> ~723 a month.

is it bad that i don't think that's a lot? (not just by comparison to the girl in the OP)

my circle of friends also has an understanding that if you call and nobody answers to send a text message instead. (because having to wait through a million voicemail prompts SUCKS.)

i used to text more, but my friends and i have started using a message board to talk to each other while everyone's at work.

i think the fact that you can communicate at your leisure (and not have a phone on your ear while you're at work/class/wherever) via text is what makes it appealing.

....annnnd add 6 more texts since the time i started typing this post.

...make that 7.

I send a lot, last month I used 998 out of my 1000 I have on my plan ($9.99/month). I used to think texting was useless too and didn't understand why people didn't just call the other person. Texting is good for when you are at work, or the other person you are talking to is at work, since you can communicate without all the co-workers thinking you are just chatting on the phone all day. Its also good for just sending a quick message without wanting to have an actual phone conversation.

About the short delay before it goes to the next character - you can usually hit the right arrow (or equivalent, to move the cursor to the right) to skip instantly to the next letter instead of pausing.

~ 100 as that is what is included in my calling plan. Some months that I'm dating girls I go over but in general I try and avoid txting too much as I have 300mins and 800mins on my other phone. Making calls/ txt over your monthly allowances su ck.

10p per txt outside of my allowance.
