How often do you shut down windows?

I know some people who swear by shutting down each time they leave the computer, and some leave it on continuously to "preserve the PSU"...

What about you?

I leave my Windows XP Pro desktop system (AMD X2) on 24/7/365, both for the F@H processing time, and for the ability to VPN in from my laptop from elsewhere if necessary. My laptop only runs when necessary, but I put it to sleep instead of shutting down, so that sort of counts, perhaps.

I put my laptops in hibernate when I'm not using them. I only reboot for patches, so once a month usually.

My MCE box runs 24/7, I just mute it and turn off the TV at night. And my ISA, Exchange and DC boxes run 24/7 except for patches.

It doens't apply so much to Windows any more, but I leave the computer running unless I'm going away for more than a day.

If those kind of issues show up, there's definitely an issue with some driver(s), spyware (most likely), or other software. A well managed system, even with Windows, should never have issues like that.

Yeah, even when leaving my Windows XP machine on for weeks it doesn't slow down at all.

I've got two systems by my desk. One's a file server on the network and one's my personal comp. The server stays on literally ALL the time, and I shut down my personal machine 50% of the time, depending on whether I've got something going that I'd like to resume tomorrow. If you use your computer most of the day, shutting it off at bedtime saves you about $0.25 a day, or $91.25 a year.

That's my reasoning, too. I always shut it down at night when I go to sleep. I don't see a point in leaving it on if I'm not going to be using for the next few hours.

Nightly, at the least. I don't leave my computer running unless I'm doing a render, and I haven't done a render on my personal computer in a loo-o-ong time.
