personally, i have my drive partitioned to give 4-8 gigs to the os and then reformat that partition every 2-4 weeks (no, it has nothing to do with activation)

i used to leave it on 24/7 as well, but since i installed rice inside my machine, its too bright to sleep with. so it goes off every night while i sleep.

rice as in, like ricing out your car? hahahah most people turn it off due to noise, but light, just add a little switch hanging out a slot blank in the back

4-8 GB? Jeez, that's like Win XP and 2 games. :)

I have completely seperate hard drives for my OS and my data. I reformat when I really need it, but seeing as I keep anti-viral software on here, run a number of spyware/adware killers, and periodically update drivers, that's not terribly often. 3-4 times a year at most. I defrag the drive occasionally too.

Boot-up times generally don't change much for me with a reformat, mostly cause I take the time to keep my drives clean in the first place. Your mileage may vary.

its not if you ONLY have your os on the tiny partition and have all your apps on a sepearate partition. this means less programs to reinstall with your os, so less work. plus, most viruses that try to delete stuff goes straight for c:/program files, so i keep my programs far away from there

Cleaning out the registry has a strange effect on some games/apps, particularly the ones with strong copy protection. I don't remember which (I think it was UT2003), but the thing flat out refused to run after a reformat where I tried that. Office XP also didn't care much for it.

About once a year. It usually coincides with a motherboard change. Not sure about reboots. Probably 1~3 times a month.

I only reinstall when I absolutely have to, ie: windows is borked or I get new hardware, which isn't very often. It's been like a year since my last reinstall.

Reboots.. Same thing. I hate rebooting. I'll typically go until I can't stand Windows deterioration anymore, and reboot, or the power flickers or something.

Been 28 days, 14 hours and 48 minutes since my last reboot.. lol

i used to have a 5 1/4" bay for light switches, but it broke. right now im too cheap to invest in more fans, and putting in the loud ass ones i have spare wouldn't help me at night either.

With WinXP / Win2000 I usually reinstall when a HD fails... (usually every 3-4 years). Or something sooner like a stupid virus that was undetected by Norton Anti-Virus (just happend recently :().

I leave all my systems on 24/7, they keep my room nice and warm ;p

even with ghosting i am quite reluctant cuz you still need to back up so many little things (outlook messages, favorites, documents and little tweaks etc)

I re-install about once every 12-18 months. I never reboot (and my machines never lock up), unless an update to software or firmware is wanted/needed.

Every 6 months. Primary desktop has been running continuous for the last 5 months without a reboot. (Truth is my MX700 died and I havn't found the urge to plug in a different mouse, so it just sits there)

Once or twice a year.

Just did it last night. XP seemed to be falling apart. Nothing was working right and it was locking up. Ended up formating a data drive instead of my OS drive because I stupidly forgot that I was using SATA and my fdisk diskette only saw the ATA drives.

Anyone know of any free data recovery progs? I tried one last night but they charge you by the gig. I only need about 25Mb recovered.

Thanks.

When the current installation is no longer usable (too slow, gets error messages, feels unstable).

What the hell do you people do to your poor computers? 2-4 WEEKS?!?

I haven't reinstalled xp since I bought a new SFF, about a year ago. So basically whenever I buy a new motherboard.

I think I reboot about monthly (not including reboots for WU), longer on my laptop (it gets less use and hibernates most of the time). Sh1t, I reboot as often as the OP reformats.

I reformat when I need to... my last Win2K install went almost 2 full years on my PC at home.. still worked fine just before I formatted and went to XP on my newest PC.

What are you talking about?! 2-4 Weeks?! seriously now, formatting is not the only solution. If you can manager your os better you should have a lot longer than that.

I reformat once a year or so, but keep very good track of whats goign on to keep things running perfectly. Formatting every two weeks would be a total waste of time for me, and would not improve performace at all.

But yes, for that case I do have my os/programs installed on one array, with all my files stored on other drives.

also, a POLL might be nice

Word Bling Bling and such.

My blue windowed case needed a switch, else it lit up the room at night. The new one has a vent grate at the bottom, so it's dark enough to sleep with and gives it that +200MHz for "under-computer neon" :D

when I had WIN2k, I reformatted every 6 months. I haven't touched XP for well over a year... my ghost image is from Aug 2002 I think. Doesn't get "clogged up" it seems.

As for reboots... only when needed... anywhere from once every 3 to 7 days.
