I recently bought a flipless Simmons Beautyrest World Class mattress. Good thing, too, because the thing is heavy.

yeah, back home my parents bought a double pillow-top bed for my room :D too bad I don't sleep on it regularly :(

but anyway, IIRC you're supposed to flip it like once a month for the first 4 months or so, and then once every 3 months after that. And every other time, you're supposed to rotate it too. So say there's a mark on the top side of the head of the mattress (in its current position). So next time, you'd flip so it'd be on the underside of the head. Then you'd flip and rotate so it'd be on the top side of the foot of the bed. Then next time just flip so that it's on the underside of the foot. Then flip + rotate, and you're back to where you started. So the mattress goes through this cycle with 4 orientations.

The benefit is keeping the springs from conforming too much. If you always lay in the same place, on the same side of the mattress, then sooner or later the springs will start becoming more and more compressed from your weight always being in the same place. Flipping and rotating spread out the weight over 4 different parts of the mattress, so the springs won't become so deformed.

If you have a single pillow-top bed, you should just rotate it (flipping would put the pillow top on the bottom -- I guess you could do it if you didn't mind not having the pillow top for a while).

the owner's manual should specify flipping and rotating schedules.

I flip my matress about once a year. If I don't, I'll probably end up with a sag in the middle of it, like I did with my old mattress.

Never, my mattress was from the 1950's . . . my grandparent's gave it to me. It's got this nice little concave area in the middle that I fit so well in. Why would I want to lose that?

We flipped ours once a month for the first 6 months, then once every two months for the next 6 months. At least that's what the instructions said if I remember correctly. Didn't say what to do after the first year, but we plan on flipping it every 6 months now probably.

Why do so many of you have waterbeds? I want one.

Oh, btw, I have never flipped my matress.

i flip my mattress whenever i pee on it.

So what do you do when it becomes a sopping, foul-smelling, urine-soaked mess on both sides and all the way through?

Should I do it every time I change the sheets? (Once a week?) Once a month? When I notice lumpiness?
Hmmmmm We used to do it whenever we remembered to. :p I think once a month is coo.

Oh, and his bed is cool. He ended up getting more than he thought he would though. heehee He was just gonna get a mattress and then we had to get a box spring, then a frame, and then I helped pick out the headboard. :)

I used to have a waterbed and I kept it hot all the time too. Mmmmmm warm vinyl.

But there's something to be said for the coolness of a regular bed too. I've gotten to where I quite like it.
