Watching the little blocks move around is so fascinating! I don't get addicted to it though, I just defrag when it comes to my mind.

ryudo, when you access the files in your hard drive, the files get split up into pieces and are put in different locations(whereever is convienient). Next you access the file, the computer has to search for all the pieces and put it together into the file. When you defrag, the computer goes through your Hard Drive and rearranges the pieces so that the the files are whole again. So the files are easier to access. Your Hard Drive gets fragmented again after a while, so some people periodically defrag. Hope that helps! :)

i reformat and reinstall windows so much that I don't get a chance to defrag before I need to reformat and reinstall. also, the second partition on which I keep the stuff i need to last more than 1 installation (drivers, etc) don't get changed much, so I'd have to said about twice a year.

I run Scandisk, System File Checker, Disk Cleanup, delete any Temp Files that have accumulated, delete any accumulated History, and clear out the excess baggage in the Documents Folder, then I defragment the HD, probably 3 times per week. My PC thanks me for it by operating a h*ll of a lot smoother AND faster:) -kd5-

coopa, I would suggest you defragment your HD soon. But be prepared, it's gonna take awhile..... the HD's probably scrambled. The internet has the ability to do that. That's why I defrag 3 times per week. -kd5-
