How often do you back up your data, using ghost? Do you burn a copy of the image to a CD-R or to another hard drive?

I never back up in any way shape or form. The ONLY time I have backed up is transferring 4GB of MP3s between computers.

I save my ghost images to another hard drive. Can you span CDRs with ghost?

I predict you'll change your mind. Your drive will eventually, more than likely, fail.

Yeah, just choose your CD-ROM drive letter as the destination...... but I heard you have to format your CD-RW media first.

Backing up the entire HD is totally unnecessary... Most of your data is Windows and installed programs. The stuff you download (MP3, video) you probably burn to save space, not to back them up. I only back up personal documents, my programs' source code, as well as screen shots of receipts of things I buy online.

I back up my OS and applications with ghost when ever I build a new system. I copy the image to another Hdrive and only do ths once.
All data that is important is copied with Nero.

Whoa, you must a lot of free time, can I call you when I have a crash and have you do a complete re-install of the OS, security and Office updates, programs and their updates?

I do a complete backup with Drive Image one a week on a second hard drive, and if I get a hdd crash or a mangled OS from a bad install, I can be up and running in 1 1/2 hrs like nothing happened.

When you back/restore an image of a Partition or complete HD you do it by booting up using a startup disk then running the ghostPE.exe

There are dos and windows versions of Ghost. I have used both. They aren't hard to use if you just play around with it. The newer versions even let you take out files or add files to the Ghost image you created in the past without making a whole new image. It usually will crunch your data down a bit too so that the image isn't as large as what was on the partition.

I usually just Ghost the image to another partition and keep it there. I have several configs that allow me to install or test machines quickly. I can have a machine up and running in about half an hr. It's good to just do for your windows even, lets you configure your machine to how you like it and then make an image, save it and then you can load it whenever you want for a fresh install. This way I don't have to remember if I wanted this here, if I dnloaded that app, or if I have that hardware installed.. etc.

I used to do a Drive Image backup of my boot partitions once a week.
I got out of that habit, but I will start it up again with my new
system maintenance plan. So far I do an new image at least once a month.

At work I used to do an image backup once a week, as part of the weekly
virus scan, scandisk, defrag, optimize routine.

For the rest of the data (work files, mp3s, etc) I just use normal backup
tools, or burn the files and folders straight to CD. Those files are a lot
easier to restore as long as the OS itself is intact.

I usually keep the latest image on another partition or a separate HD on the
system. But will burn it to CD every now an then to keep "off site", and to
keep track of older images. This can help if you have a recurring problem and
need to restore from a past point to try to figure out where it showed up from.

I've found that I have less to worry about from HD failure than I do from
new software screwing up settings during an install, Windows glitches and
or driver installs causing more problems than they fix, and basic user error;
these cause me more lost time and lost files than any Hardware failures I've
ever had.

I think you are confused between Ghost and Ghost Exployer, Ghost runs from DOS, Ghost Exployer runs from windows.

"I save my ghost images to another hard drive. Can you span CDRs with ghost?"

with the new ghost that comes with NSW 2002 you can span cdr's and the ghost boot disk even gives you cdr support and will spann it autmaticaly for you if you burn the image directly to the cd best thing is you can set it up so the cd is bootable and auto runs on startup installing for you.

I back up when i first install my os and get the latest updates
the rest of my crap i back up about every month or so all my downloads and things like that.
when i have to install the ghost image again i update all the drivers and redo the image till the next time.

I think that 10 min of installing a ghost image is a whole lot better then 2 hours of formating installing the os and updating the drivers

Never, I got way too much stuff on my hard drive to ghost it. I just backup my data files (mp3's, docs, videos) every once in awhile.

I use Powerquest's Drive Image and creat a new c: backup image on another HD about every 2 weeks, or just before I install something new. I also copy that image to cd-rw disks sometimes as a double backup of my main c:.

I have my mp3 collection on another HD and have those files copied as a backuped on a another HD that I have unplugged.

Once a week.
I have 2 HD's in a RAID 0 array and I backup to a local 10 gig Maxtor drive every Saturday.
All my music, program patches, and downloaded files are on my file server.

I use Drive Image to backup my C: drive (OS + apps) at least once a week.

This just saved my butt 2 days ago. I went to boot up and Xp wanted to run chkdsk so I let it. It found TENS OF THOUSANDS of errors (the screen was scrolling by so fast I couldn't read it) and said it fixed them. It went to reboot and started booting into Windows and stopped withan error "LSASRV.dll' is missing. Tried to repair from recovery console (just as an excercise because I knew I had a backup image to use) which didn't work. Booted from my Drive Image floppy set and reinstalled my latest backup image in about 7 minutes. Rebooted my box and was ready to go.

If this isn't a good reason to do some sort of backup, I don't know what would be.
