For real? Are these people related to the Romneys? I see a lot of animal cruelty stuff online. My rescue lives a good life. I only wish I could rescue more.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A dog that was seen in a crate strapped to the back of an RV on a B.C. highway during the sweltering heatwave over the weekend has been seized from its owner, who could be charged with animal cruelty.

Images of the dog in the crate were posted on social media Sunday, when temperatures climbed into the 30s and 40s across the southern Interior. RCMP announced Monday the dog was found at a campground in Oliver.

“It looks like (the owners) came from the Lower Mainland up to the Interior,” Sgt. Jason Bayda with South Okanagan RCMP said Monday. “What we’re being told is the rationale behind it was that there was no room in the vehicle and it would have been too hot in the trailer, so I guess this is what they thought was the next best option, albeit not a a very good one.”

The BC SPCA says it obtained a warrant and took the dog away from its owner on Wednesday. It’s now in the care of the SPCA, which is recommending charges of animal cruelty.

“The dog is getting great care. He’s getting lots of love and attention. We’re now following the legal steps in the process,” Lorie Chortyk with the BC SPCA said Friday.

That process includes giving the owner 14 days to file an appeal.

The dog is not currently available for adoption.

would you also say if I have a dog in a crate strapped into the bed of my truck that the dog is being abused?

We had our neighbors claim we were abusing our dog because he was outside in a blizzard. He is a 120 lb Great Pyrenees. He loves blizzards, and would not come in.

i'm not saying on a hitch rack is really safe, but also if that dog is in good shape then I don't know if it rises to the level of a criminal offence.

Depends on the particular circumstances I think. Some dogs and their crates are simply too big to fit into many vehicles.

The crate on the hitch rack seems unlikely to contain such an animal though and rather unsafe. Not being able to see them at all times when on the road would also be unacceptable to me.

A dog should be in the car with you ultimately. They should be treated like part of the family. But if worst comes to worst, at least if the climate is ok for the dog, then do what you gotta do. But not on the back of a hitch in 100+ degree weather, and if you seethe photo in the article, that dog had a thick coat. It was probably hot as fuck.

As far as in the bed of a pickup, it can't be easy for the dog over bumps or sharp turns at any decent rate of speed. Those metal beds aren't really easy to grip. I've read multiple stories of dogs falling, jumping or flying off of truck beds. But they weren't crated and strapped down. Just sitting in the bed.

I think you cry a little too much in life and tell others what to do when you aren't even in a similar predicament. People who "abuse" pets is pretty easy to tell, it's white and black, not a gray area.

+1

We have a senior rescue that was obviously treated poorly. He was estimated to be 8 at the time, 4 years ago, and had probably been used for bear hunting. He is a Plott Hound, bred for bear and boar hunting.

Timid, shy, scared of noises or even sudden moves. He would usually flinch when I reached out to pet him. He has come a long way in 4 years, and is living the good life as a pampered pet vs. a possession. But what caused me to really take a second look at the shelter was that someone walked a puppy by his window at the shelter, and he jumped up and got down in play posture. Long story short, we brought him home. He had been in the shelter 3 months at that point.

They could have at least put the dog IN the trailer. Hanging off the back of a trailer is going to be a very bouncy ride. I wouldn't even trust my bike on the back of one of those things as much as they bounce around.

Wait, the dogs have dog waifu pillows?
Lol. Yes. We made pillows that have the dogs printed on them. They also have portraits on the wall painted by my wife.

Edit...wait I did not know what that ment... they are just regular pillows.

I think you kinda sound like a dick and should not own a dog. Complete lack of empathy to what are very often extremely sensitive creatures. You don't have to starve a dog to abuse it or anything that dramatic. Strapping a dog to the back of a hitch rack in 100 degree weather going at a very high rate of speed so it's bouncing around for a long trip is not a good look. The dog wasn't even that big. Make room in the truck or have someone watch it. Or don't own the dog. In your case, don't own a dog.

I know you've seen his posts in P&N, I think you can remove the "kinda sound like a dick" and just confirm he's a dick. Not surprised that he's also a shitbag to dogs.

I suspect in his case that being a total waste of the oxygen he breathes, that this is a long-standing family trait, learned at his brood mare's knee, as dad was probably long gone.

Put this slug of a person on ignore, he thrives on being a complete asshole.

FYI, I can see his posts, this is based on the responses he has goaded out of people that still give him the attention he so desperately seeks. The surest way to hurt him is to ignore him, and let him scream into a void of nobody is listening.

Forgetting about the cramped space, heat from the exhaust/highway/other cars, and all the bouncing around that's going on... the dog must have been going crazy with all the noise around him.

People like that, and anyone defending those idiots, aren't fit to have pets.

The messed up part is that they had the whole freaking camper. Why not just let the dog loose in there. There's no reason to have it stuck in a crate for that long, let alone outside. And if crate was absolutely needed (maybe it's a dog that gets into lot of mischief) then at least put the crate inside the camper.

Assuming this is a family and not just one guy you could even have one person stay in the camper with the dog. Do anything to keep it comfortable for the trip. Pets get stressed with travel.
