Sounds like a soda can crumpling.

I have to ask though... was there any good way out of that, assuming the pulling truck couldn't make it onto the right side embankment?

I would have winched it slowly. It looks like they are at an Offroad park, so there had to be some winches out there, somewhere.

Getting a running start while trying to recover another vehicle is bad news. I knew of at least one death of someone we all knew back when I was offroading. He was pulling out a vehicle, got a running start and the shackle broke, went through the window and the seat, killing him. There is a fairly famous photo of a Jeep CJ with a tow strap/shackle that went through the seat and then the windshield. IIRC, the driver happened to not die because when it broke he was thrown forward in his seat, so his head went down.

I have seen personally straps break and do massive damage to vehicles, and those are just nylon fiber straps!

Maybe pull the right front tire up with a tractor with a scoop? Preferable a front end loader. The have someone pull it from behind. I think if you could chain it and pull it up you could get it out of the mud enough to pull it out.

I'm just guessing though.

Maybe they could have tried from behind, too, since the truck obviously came from that direction.

I thought the thing was going to flip over. I didn't think this would happen :)

Yes. I've pulled people out of snow in very similar situations.

First of all, they were using the full length of the tow cable like a bunch of fucking morons. What they needed to do was back the truck up until the rear wheels were just about on the edge and then loop the tow cable until it was semi taunt.

Their problem was the angle. With the tow cable basically digging into the dirt they were combating various physics problems at once, the biggest of which was that they were essentially pulling the front end of the jeep DEEPER into the mud. Had the truck been at the edge of the ditch and the tow cable secured correctly they would have been using the proper upwards momentum to free the sunk wheel out of the mud instead of simply pulling the vehicle deeper inwards.

That entire situation was completely avoidable, those guys were a bunch of idiots who either had no clue what they were doing or were trying to destroy the front axle intentionally.

So you'd prefer I snapped your front axle in two while recovering your vehicle as opposed to doing it properly and getting it out in one piece?

I would think a planted stake in line with the rope to change the angle of attack for the stuck jeep would do it as well. Once the jeep is unburied, then I would think about the angular attack.

It looked like the front axle was still in one piece, it just wasn't attached to the jeep anymore ;)

Saga on the happiest day of his life
Saga after his girlfriend dumped him
Saga hearing a very funny joke
Saga in a homicidal rage

I guess my sarcasm meter broke.

But in my defense I've been reading OT for days and it's super fucking hard to not interpret everything there as someone being legitimate and equally retarded at the same time every time they post. =(
