How noisy/quiet is the Athlon 64 retail fan/heatsink?

I'm thinking about getting an Athlon 64 processor soon, and I was wondering how much noise the retail fan/heatsink combo makes. I'm trying to build a fairly quiet system, and I'd like to know whether the retail heatsink will fit my purposes. I haven't decided whether I'm going with socket 754 or 939 yet, if that makes a difference.

not noisy at all, compared to the xp-90 with tornado, sounds like a blow dryer when in other room

Worse case scenario, @ around 6000 RPM's it's noisy & can shake/vibrate your case and anything else in contact with. OTOH I've heard others (from another thread) claiming the AMD HSF never exceeding 3500 RPM's & at that speed, the noise is tolerable [to me].

My stock AMD fan (came with my 3400+ Clawhammer) runs at about 3600RPM and is quieter than the ATI Silencer 4 on my X800 Pro. It's a very nice cooler.

Edit: I made a typo, my fan runs at about 3300-3400RPM normally (per SoltekHM v1.26i).

mine ran at about 2900 and was utterly silent.

My 3200+ A64 Winchester is running at 2.5ghz with the stock hs/fan, it is usually doing about 2900-3000 rpm. Even at this low speed my idle temp is 38c and under load it never gets above 45c.

It is very quiet to me. My old 2500+ running at 3200+ speed had a hs/fan on it that sounded like a hair dryer, so my new system is a treat to my ears.

Exactly...There is no flipping 6000rpm stock cooler...Oh unless you believe that flipping moron Toms hardware and his incorrect cpu fan speed in his stess testing marathon....

AMD would not go that high cause on there webpage it states acoustic specifications or maximum is like 36db....With the size fan they are using that would be in the 3600-4000rpm max range....

You were saying?

FWIW I didn't get my facts from "Tom's" or anyone else. It was based on personal experience (noise & vibration) & ASUS Probe (RPM readout).

You can also easily modify crap low throw 10x70mm fan to a full size 25x80mm fan allowing for better cooling and lower rpm...

if you have any other case fans, chances are they'll drown out the stock cpu fan. It's pretty quiet.

I had one and I asked several ppl who had them and no one has ever seen it go more then 4000 max.

I dont where the 6000 is coming from.

quiet in my experiences... only reason I went with the XP-90 is because it's EVEN quieter paired with a low RPM 92mm fan, and keeps my CPU slightly cooler than before (and it looks nice)

but the stock cooler for my 3200+ was fine!
