I spent quite a lot of time making this site : /

How much would you charge for having built this website or a website like it? OR, what do you think the market rate for this website would be?

Also, I organised all the webhosting for him also, along with all aspects of the webpage. He needs to give me a little bit more content which I'll cut and paste into some of the other pages that are a bit empty.

The website works best in IE : /

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT make websites IE-only or IE-optimized that kind of crap. :frown: Make it standards compliant!!

As for the cost.. umm.. depends on how many pages are there, probably $30-$50 per page?

Try to use CSS for layouts.. I can probably code your frontpage in about less than half of the code your are using now, not to mention using a lot less placeholder graphics :)

Hi screw3d :)

Yep, I'll fix it so it works in all browsers. I'm 99.999% sure it is because of the templates in DWMX.

And yep, thanks for all of those suggestions :)

But, do you really think it's worth between 30 and 50 dollars a page? I mean, that would add up to quite a lot of money? Although, I did spend quite a lot of time on it. I guess I was just wondering what the rate would be that other people who do this stuff for a living would charge?

Do you make websites as your business or how did you come up with that figure of $30-$50 per page? I am an IT student and would like to start up my own web/IT consulting business when I finish the course :)

I don't do this for a living so I'm not really sure:) Actually I'll wager that $30-$50 is on the low side, especially if you also did some server-side scripting :)

Try looking at w3schools to see how you can accomplish standards-compliance

hi, thanks again for the comments :)

The only server side scripting is the 'contactus' page. THe other pages have a .aspx extension but I could just as easily renamed them as .htm :)

I think you have yourself in somewht of a pickle.
No matter what you charge for the service it is probably not going to be satisfactory for the both of you.
Never again take on a job like this until the price is agereed to beforehand. Trying to negoiate a price after the work is done is going to cause hard feelings between the two of you and if you are friends may end the friendship. Charge him what he is willing and able to pay and if it is a low amount just take it and use it as a lesson on how to not do business.

charge him on per/hour basis. give yourself a good rate. because making a website and finding a host is all your own time.

I hope you guys are bearing in mind that there is no database on the back end or anything like that. Basically they're all just static pages except the 'contactus' page. I'm sure you guys all know that already but I just wanted to clarify since I posted this same thing on another forum and they thought it had a database on the back end

Yeah I think you're right. Actually my brother found out that he's willing to pay a couple of hundred for the website depending on what it looks like, and how much time was spent on it etc. He will pay whatever for it but I just wanted to ensure that whatever I charge him is what the market is for it and not more or less.

I also really want to thank you guys for responding :)

It works for me, but on a few pages the nav bar at the bottom runs right through the page content/text.

When using mozilla and enlarging the font size using control + the text ends up under the navigation bar at the bottom. And why they heck did you using picture of text? What if some one wants to change the text or a user wants to copy and paste the text.

Yeah you're right. It was a very stupid thing to do. I was learning how to do stuff in fireworks mx and for some silly reason I typed the text there. And then I exported it into DWMX and made it into a template.

Anyway, you're right, I'll change that so that is text and not part of an image.

I have a friend who charges $50/hr. for web design and he's not much better at it than me. (and I just started re-learning a couple of months ago)

A professional website price can vary in cost. Most coders will bill at >$100/hr.

To give you some ideas:

The company I work for is in the midst of paying to have their site re-designed. It is a corporate website, the pages would not be that difficult (IMO) to code, and they are paying >$2500 for the site designed by a 'professional'. Probably a total of 10-12 pages and that doesn't include any cost for stock photos. He is a professional coder, is quick, has clean code, and is standards complient.

I'm working on a project for a local photographer's website for ~$400 and they will use me for hosting so I'll also profit there. 7-10 pages and they provide the photos. I'm not a professional, I do this on the side for fun.

Another project I'm working on is for my local fire dept. (of which I am a member). The goal of the project is to help me better learn .php coding, image and file manipulation, and MySQL database integration. The site is a Content Management System I'm building from the ground up. Cost them ~$0.00 as I'm doing it for my own knowledge and have no time schedule.

Hopefully the above examples will help you.
