How much would it cost to get 4 rooms in my house wired for Cat5e?

Anybody have a clue? I'd like to have ethernet cable run to 4 rooms in my house so I don't have to rely on wireless everywhere, especially with the popularity of video streaming.

if you need to cut through walls, and drill and snake wires to a centralized place, it could be either cheap or expensive..

before i moved into my house, i rip up a few walls and ran 4-12 pairs of cat6 to each room..
everything is ran into the basement to a patch panel.. tape the walls back up and paint.. took a few weeks but well worth it..

if u're willing to drill through floors and have wires exposed, it'll cost you next to nothing..

Yeah, it's not difficult to do it yourself if you're reasonably handy.

If the rooms share a wall, can be access from the basement or attic, and have a closet for discrete access between floors, or have heating A/C ductwork then it shouldn't cost much more than $500-600.

Other wise is it going to cost at least $500-600 ++ drywall/mud/paint repair.

a few years ago my dad and i did pretty much our entire house, 8 or 9 rooms, and it took about a week. I'd say do it yourself, its not that hard. especially if the rooms are stacked like you said.

Check the price of wire. Then buy a spool of bailing wire. Then get some 60 pound test fishing line and some heavy elongated fishing weights. Get a hole saw and electric drill and some drill bits.

Now put on your best, I mean your most expensive clothes and climb into the attic to drop lines and pull through your wires.

You should have a partner at the bottom to catch the lines you are dropping.

most probably haven't run cable with their 'easy' job theroy.

It's going to depend on several things. Most walls have caps, most walls have crossbeams....all interfere with dropping cable.

do it yourself, it's easy. I did 5 rooms over 3 floors and it took a weekend. I didn't have a drill or a fish line so i had to hire a handyman to give me a hand. The total cost was about $400 for EVERYTHING. totally worth it not have to deal with wireless flaking out on you.

You can also run the cable on the outside which is sometimes the easiest method of all.
lol, network cable is not made for outside exposure

Put cable in PVC tubes.

Don't forget drain wire termination and MOV's if running outside. 😉

I put a few lines of CAT5 in some PVC, dug a trench through a couple of driveways, patched it with asphalt and had free internet.

It wasn't easy, though. It was ripped up during a re-surfacing of the driveway several years later.

I also had an exterior CAT5 line. No problem with that connection.

i dont know, if you look on craigslist you can probably find em for $50 a hole...depending on what kind of quality you're willing to accept.

😉

just finished the last one in my house. all but the third floor...no need. you can do it your self. fish tape and buy like 4 or 5 boxes so you can do all the runs at once.
