How much would basic tuneup and change of timing belt cost?

Since I bought a NISSAN (93 sentra) on the weekend I want to get some basic stuff done to it: oil change (I want synthetic cause I'm l337), checking of transmission fluids, coolants, etc. Also I may get the timing belt changed for good measure (if they say it needs that). I have no service records so no idea if it's new or on it's last legs or whatever. So at a normal mechanic how much would this sort of stuff run? Tuneup + timing belt.
 
DO NOT do the timing belt yourself! Take it to TWO mechanics and go with the lower one. Some of them will say you need a new head gasket, etc type sh1t! Could be anywhere from $100-$1000 depends on what needs to be done.
 
I have no intention of doing anything myself. I can only fill the car with gas 🙂

My friend was telling me that he was told that there is so much labor involved with changing a timing belt (the belt is very low-cost) that by the time you get to it you might as well change it anyway. Any truth to this? This is what he was told... Is there a reliable way for the mechanic to determine if the belt is newish or how much life is left to it or whatever?
 
Watch out, the timing belt has the possibility of being a VERY expensive repair, depending on its location in the engine bay.

As for the other stuff, that is a good idea, and shouldn't be all that expensive.

Have you considered changing the oil yourself? It's quite easy, and then you can spend the money you save doing it yourself on the extra cost of the synthetic oil and premium filter.
 
it kinda depends skoorb. my mech (i visited him today) says when you change tranny fluid, you'll get 4-5 quarts max, which is less than half the fluid in there, so its not really worth it unless your doin an entire rebuild.

timing belts need to be changed around 60-80k. you there yet?

you might wanna PM mastertech. i think he said he worked with nissan for a while, so you may want to tap some of his knowledge
 
Thanks i'll PM mastertech. I bought the car this weekend with 142,000 miles on it with no service records so truly I have NO idea what's been done to it. I hear that a transmission rebuild is best but perhaps changing the 4-5 quarts is better than nothing...

ok yeah, timing belts are a pain in the ass, you have to release a bunch of tensioners, route the belt around everything...its labor intensive and you do NOT want to do it over the weekend in your garage.

if you do manage to change it check out the water pump too. if itsnt too expensive have it done, b/c if it goes you're gonna spend over $100 on parts and labor...might as well do it now if he puts it on the lift
 
When I got my brother's timing belt (And a few little things) done on his 91 Sentra it was just under $1000. It's not the belt that costs $$$, it's all the labour. So if they take it off to check, might as well get it changed. Better safe than sorry, right?

Would $1200 cover an entire engine rebuild? I have no intentions of getting one of course...but I wonder if the engine does eventually die out and I need a new one (not new, but rebuilt or replaced) it would be possible for $1200 with labor and parts...?
 
Im assuming if you purchased a car with that many miles on it, you checked it out somewhat, and that its running pretty good. I would have a compression test done on it to see if the engine is worn excessively. If its OK, and no oil burning obvious, then just change the plugs, air filter, Oil and filter,fuel filter, and inspect the spark plug wires, cap and rotor and replace as necessary. If you have no idea if the timing belt has been replaced I would spend the money to do that. Its only about 2 1/2 hours labor if I recall right, and the belt isnt to awfull expensive. The problem of ignoring it is that the Sentra does not have a zero interference engine and you can bend the valves and in extreme cases do damage to a piston if the timing belt gives way. ITs worth the money for the security if the car is in otherwise excellent condition. Just an off the wall guess on the labor would be around 200-300 dollars average. I havent done Nissan repair for since 1988 so Im not up to date of course on labor times for timing belt replacement so I could be off somewhat but not a great amount. Its generally recommended to replace the timing belt every 60000 miles. You cant tell most of the time by inspection that it needs it, so you have to go by miles since last replaced.

An Engine rebuild would likely not be worth the cash with that many miles unless you got the car real cheap or given to you. Its an easy chore just to do an incar rering, but anything more would be very time consuming. If the transmission isnt slipping just do a normal transmission service... you can flush all the old fluid out with the right equipment. Check the coolant protection level and replace as necessary, and I would invest in a new thermostat and gasget..as an overheat is almost a guaranteed headgasget job with the aluminum head. Have them pressure test the cooling system and identify any weak hoses or loose clamps. This would be a good start.
