I went to a dealership I've dealt with quite a bit in the past looking for a cheap car. The salesman took me back to the cars they had just recieved on trade. One of those cars was a 99 Toyota Camry LE, auto w/ leather, moonroof, ect. and a surprisingly peppy 4 cylinder w/ 87000miles. I could get the car for $5400, in fact, I was in the process of putting the deal together when we noticed that the car didn't go into reverse very well. It would rev up, and move a little, but not much unless you took it up to about 4-5000 RPM's. The car also didn't shift into 3rd very well. Upon further inspection, I noticed that the tranny fluid was grey and quite stinky. At this point, the sales manager said that we couldn't put a deal together until they knew what the problem was.

So, they're mechanics are going to look at the car tomorrow (unfortunately, it's a Honda dealer). I'm suspecting the car needs a new transmission or a major repair (Is this a correct assumption, or would crappy fluid be enough to make the car run like that?) How much would it cost to put a new automatic transmission in a Camry?
I might have the option of buying the car "as is" for around $4500-5000 and getting it fixed on my own. The $5400 initial price is no longer valid since we discoved the problem

The engine seemed pretty solid, no leaks or smoke or stink coming out of it. The car books for $8900 trade- in ~$11000 retail, so it would be a steal (this is my motication, anyway)

The car is only 4 years old and the tranny is already trashed? I would take it to an independent mechanic for a checkup before I bought it. You might find out the compression is low or any other number of problems.

The previous owner(s) probably never changed the tranny fluid. Yep, it's toast. Expect to shell out $2000 or more to get it repaired/replaced.

A four year old car with 87k miles (20k+/year avg) and a damaged transmission. Those two things together would make me rethink buying this car, especially considering what a replacement automatic would add to the price.

Yeah, did the previous owners beat the crap out of it or what?
