How much wood would a woodchuck chuck?

I had a debate last night about a word in the woodchuck question. Is it

A) How much wood, would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck would chuck wood?

or

B) How much wood, would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

I think A sounds funnier since "woodchuck" and "would chuck" sound identical. Plus almost all the words contain the letter "w" so I like the looks of A better.

However I could be wrong. What is the correct phrase?

Aside gfrom the cool pic, does anyone know the answer to the question? or is the point just a play on words?
I saw it on Jeopardy once but dont remember the answer......

<edit>

Ok I found the answer, amazing what a little effort will yield........

Answer

Or for the lazy,

The article reports on the work of New York state wildlife expert Richard Thomas, who found that a woodchuck could (and does) chuck around 35 cubic feet of dirt in the course of digging a burrow. Thomas reasoned that if a woodchuck could chuck wood, he would chuck an amount equivalent to the weight of the dirt, or 700 pounds.

i think its B. thats what i was taught in music class or whatever that was in elem school.

<< B makes more grammatical sense 🙂 >>

Ditto... logically, "could" a woodchuck chuck wood or "would" a woodchuck chuck wood? If they could, they probably would.

Lord, it hurt to type that, 😀

Makes one wonder how much was the Federal grant to this dude to research the answer to that eternal question. Tax dollars well-spent
