He can have fun all he wants, smoke pot, have orgy, get drunk and run around naked. He isn't going to jail; he will just lose hundreds of millions in endorsement. This is a free world, he can do whatever he want and corporate sponsors can do whatever they want, including not having people with image problem on their payroll. And US Olympic committee is the same; they have the right not to pick people with bad image to represent the country.

People here need to understand the world doesn't revolve around them and personal choices have consequences to others. You can do whatever, fine, but it doesn't mean that others have to tolerate it and live with the consequences you created.

I was referring to how sad it is that partaking in a completely harmless activity generates this amount of fuss. And I doubt you need to lecture a guy who spends a majority of his time in various levels of pain due to constant training that life ain't easy.

In terms of that bong hit hurting Plelps in terms of advertising sponsorship money, I do not give a rats ass, I won't buy something just because Plelps endorses it or not.

OK OK, Plelps is not exactly a poster child for the Religious right, but I will never bet on the religious right in any swim off against Plelps. Einstein was a pretty smart fellow, but he probably stunk as a swimmer or a basketball player. Get over it. GWB may be good as a Mountain Biker, so what.

When you too can win eight gold medals in a single Olympic game, I will listen to your fantasies and not before.

Only non-pot smokers retain the ability to think clearly, one toke, and all cognitive ability permanently vanishes, and if you do not believe me, please watch the cult film titled Reefer Madness.

The expression on the face of the prison matron is worth the entire price of admission. If that does not scare you straight, nothing will.

Yeah, that stat was convincing the first time I saw it too, I don't blame you if you take it extremely seriously. Of course, once you realize that 90% of those criminals also sell other much more dangerous and addictive drugs (heroin, coke, etc.), but weren't caught with them, the stat suddenly becomes less convincing. Occasional users don't get imprisoned at anywhere near the rate that the high-rate slangers do. And let's be honest, if you're stupid enough to slang weed past the designated kilos, you deserve to go to jail.

He can have all the fun he wants. You just have to remember he is endorsing many different products... I mean.. can you learn to speak chinese while you are stoned? I would probably need to after using rosetta stone for an hour.

But he is a representative of those products. He should have more sense when these companies are paying him lots of money. They do not want thier products associated with a drug user.. plain and simple. Whether people here approve or disapprove of marijuana use is irrelevent. Here in the U.S. it is illegal. If you get caught your employer may not want you to be associated with them anymore.

Thats why I never understood people like PacMan Jones and Ricky Williams... hell stay straight for a couple of years... earn millions from your NFL salary and endorsements, retire then smoke all the weed you want.

This.

It's also nice to see that even Phelps readily admits that it was a very poor decision -- "regrettable," "demonstrated bad judgment," "inappropriate" -- which happened to be my entire point...

Take your reefer madness bullshit elsewhere, eh?

Moron.

I bet 100% of criminals do alcohol too. Quick! Let's make that illegal too! Oh... wait.

Fscking puritans. If there is any anti-social behavior that should be make illegal, it's yours. Mind your own business.

Right or wrong, weed is still illegal. If it was legal, I'd probably smoke it from time to time myself. But it's not. It's illegal. Like Phelps, I too would lose my entire livelihood if I ever smoked it. So I don't smoke it. End of story.

Phelps acted the f'n fool.

Sad that...

So you just do whatever you're told then?

Yeah, except when they tell you you can't have your guns anymore. Then you climb a clock tower.

On topic, it's amusing watching him getting crucified for having fun outside of the narrow parameters we've apparently deemed acceptable. What's he going to do next? Have sex out of wedlock? The boy's out of control.

He publicly apologized this morning, saying all the usual happy horse shit necessary to appease the douchebags with sticks up their asses. All will be forgiven.

Nobody cares, I think IOC just made a comment about it; this is now a dead issue.

the IOC pretty much does not care

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn...section=oly&id=3878294

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- The International Olympic Committee expressed confidence Monday that Michael Phelps will learn from his "inappropriate behavior" and continue to serve as a role model after a British newspaper published a photo of him inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at last year's Beijing Olympics, apologized and acknowledged "regrettable behavior" after the picture was published Sunday by the tabloid News of the World.

"Michael Phelps is a great Olympic champion," the IOC said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press on Monday. "He apologized for his inappropriate behavior. We have no reason to doubt his sincerity and his commitment to continue to act as a role model."

During the Beijing Olympics, IOC president Jacques Rogge called Phelps "the icon of the games."

Marijuana is viewed differently from performance-enhancing drugs under World Anti-Doping Agency rules. An athlete is subject to WADA sanctions only for a positive test that occurs during competition periods.

The News of the World said the picture was taken during a November house party while Phelps was visiting the University of South Carolina.

The party occurred nearly three months after the Olympics while Phelps was taking a long break from training, and his actions should have no impact on the medals he won in. Beijing.

He has never tested positive for banned substances and the case is unlikely to fall under any doping rules.

?I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment,? Phelps said in the statement released by one of his agents. ?I?m 23 years old and despite the successes I?ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.?

You don't really think this statement came from his heart do you?

This comment was delivered by his publicity managers, and it was written by the same group of people.

He probably considers himself an idiot to think that any of those people he was partying with were his friends, and that he could relax around them.

I hope the person that snapped that picture and sold it to the highest paying tabloid gets regularly pelted with urin filled water baloons every time they leave their dorm room.

+1

In a time of great financial crisis, this is news? I think the news should be that our politicians aren't introducing legislation to allow responsible adults to make their own friggen lifestyle choices(or repealing legislation which prevents it.) You disapprove and have enough support, tax it and deal with our budget issues.

I hope this helps to spread the message that pot isn't some horrible killer drug and that casual use is more common than people think. Hopefully this will get it legalized faster.

this is kind of a ridiculous situation. i'm sure many of the people who work at the
advertising agencies have smoked marijuana. same for the workers at whatever
company makes the products he might sponsor, Wheaties, Nike shoes.

i understand he feels bad about making his mom cry. but still, he's a young
person, he was having fun.

i'd like to see him join up with some other Olympians to make a rap song and
make a statement, they can live without the ad revenues of the companies
that hypocritically condemn his partying choices.

Michael Phelps has a lot of political power in this situation. i'd like to see him
do something besides put his tail between his legs and say, "i was so bad."

There has already been athletes de-medaled (Canadian Snowboarders, surprise surprise) for testing positive with Mary Jane.
