How much will it affect my gas mileage...

... with an extra 100 pounds in the trunk?

Driving to Texas and my friend wants me to lug a 100 pound piece of equipment for him to his house. Says he'll pay me $40 or so but I wonder if the difference in fuel economy will be worth it.

Adults weigh more than 100lbs generally... won't affect it much I don't think.

Well, that depends on what your car's MPG is and your travel distance. Do some simple math yourself.

I would do it. 100 pounds isnt much and 40$ is almost a full tank of gas. Plus its your friend.

yeah 40 bucks sounds about right.....unless you driving a sub-compact fiesta 100lbs should not make a difference

If you care, find out the weight of your car and the MPG you get right now on average. Figure out how efficient your car is as a whole in terms of gallon of gas burned relating to how much is outputted, and then increase the mass with that equipment and figure it out.

Adding a specific weight will make an equal difference in any car assuming their engines have a similar efficiency. There are some other assumptions too, but 100 pounds is 100 pounds in any car, and W=F*D, with force and distance not changing from this.

OP - for a computer "scientist", I'm surprised you didn't think about how to figure this out yourself.

uh... I did. I knew it would decrease my fuel efficiency, but I had no idea how much 100 pounds added to my car would affect the actual mileage I get.

The OP is definitely not a computer scientist.

The dude needs a "make a decision" website to figure out if he needs to buy more TP or not.

1) I have never used my own website
2) The site is incredibly popular and makes me a few bucks every month, so I'm not worried.

Depends on the car, but the rule of thumb I've heard is that each additional 100 lbs costs you about 1 MPG in a typical car.

I'm not scientist, but I'm not sure that there is a linear relationship between the weight of the car and the force required to move it, because the main thing working against the car is air resistance.

I just read some of the questions people have asked, and it's hilarious.
