How much will I need $ in 6 months, where will CPU prices be?

Hey all,

Umm been contemplating upgrading the old trusty Pentium D 3.4ghz cpu, at the moment its right on the borderline of getting really left behind with medium setting in crysis it can get a little jumpy when theres a whole bunch going on.

So was reading some of the other threads which has encouraed me to go with the Quad Core, to give you an idea and help answer my questions I have listed below CPU prices in Australia at the moment.

I will be saving up and spending about $300 - $400 on CPU maybe less depends on whats people on here think specially in terms of how some of these CPU's overclock.

So to wrap it up where do yas think these prices will be in 4-6 months Is it going to be worth the wait in terms of gettting bang for buck in 4-6 months as opposed to now??

It's almost impossible to say. Other than the usual pitfalls of prophecy, the big factor is Nehalem's release in your timeframe. Depending on its performance, price, availability, etc, Penryn prices could be lower or much lower. We do basically know Intel's Q3 tray prices, however.

Why would the Quad, which is identical in every spec other than having four cores, be $16 cheaper than the Duo?? What am I missing here?

Because E6600s are phased out, and aren't receiving any price drops

@BCA BAndit, there is a thread in here that quotes the price cuts and phased out CPU's. Some of which you have mentioned. I would take a looksee and then decide on what you may want to purchase. The E8400 and the E7200 are a great choice for C2D and the Q6600 is a fantastic choice for C2Q. Also, as mentioned by Winterpool, Nehalem will be released. Refer to his post as prices are not available just yet.
