Hey all,

Umm been contemplating upgrading the old trusty Pentium D 3.4ghz cpu, at the moment its right on the borderline of getting really left behind with medium setting in crysis it can get a little jumpy when theres a whole bunch going on.

So was reading some of the other threads which has encouraed me to go with the Quad Core, to give you an idea and help answer my questions I have listed below CPU prices in Australia at the moment.

Intel Core2 Duo E6550 2.33Ghz (Conroe 1333mhz) CPU, Dual core LGA775 65w 4mb, BX80557E6550
$220.00

Intel Core2 Duo E6750 2.66Ghz (Conroe 1333mhz) CPU, Dual core LGA775 65w 4mb, BX80557E6750
$253.00

Intel Core2 Duo E6850 3.00Ghz (Conroe 1333mhz) CPU, Dual core LGA775 65w 4mb, BX80557E6850
$258.50

Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz CPU, Quad core 1066FSB LGA775 95w 2x 4mb, BX80562Q6600 G0 SLACR
$280.50

Intel Core2 Quad Q6700 2.66Ghz CPU, Quad core 1066FSB LGA775 105w 2x 4mb, BX80562Q6700
$363.00

Intel Core2 Quad Q9450 2.66Ghz CPU, Quad core LGA775 12mb, 45nm, 1333FSB, BX80569Q9450
$495.00

Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 2.83Ghz CPU, Quad core LGA775 12mb, 45nm, 1333FSB, BX80569Q9550
$731.50

Intel Core2 Quad QX9650 Extreme 3.0Ghz CPU, 1333FSB Quad core LGA775 12mb, BX80562QX9650
$1386.00

Intel Core2 Duo E8200 2.66Ghz (1333mhz) CPU, Dual core LGA775 45nm 6mb, BX80570E8200
$242.00

Intel Core2 Duo E8400 3.0Ghz (1333mhz) CPU, Dual core LGA775 45nm 6mb, BX80570E8400
$297.00

Intel Core2 Duo E8500 3.16Ghz (1333mhz) CPU, Dual core LGA775 45nm 6mb, BX80570E8500
$423.50

Intel Core2 Duo E7200 2.53Ghz (1066mhz) CPU, Dual core LGA775 45nm 3mb, BX80571E7200
$192.50

Intel Core2 Quad Q9300 2.5Ghz CPU, Quad core LGA775 6mb L2, 45nm, 1333FSB, BX80580Q9300
$368.50

I will be saving up and spending about $300 - $400 on CPU maybe less depends on whats people on here think specially in terms of how some of these CPU's overclock.

So to wrap it up where do yas think these prices will be in 4-6 months Is it going to be worth the wait in terms of gettting bang for buck in 4-6 months as opposed to now??

Thanks in advance this place in a vault of great info.

It's almost impossible to say. Other than the usual pitfalls of prophecy, the big factor is Nehalem's release in your timeframe. Depending on its performance, price, availability, etc, Penryn prices could be lower or much lower. We do basically know Intel's Q3 tray prices, however.

(I guess I'm an idiot because I couldn't figure out how to make a new thread, so sorry for using yours)

Why would a Quad be cheaper than a Duo?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819115003

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - Retail

FSB 1066MHz

$230.99

-----------------------------------------

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819115017

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor - Retail

FSB 1066MHz

$214.99

-----------------------------------------

Why would the Quad, which is identical in every spec other than having four cores, be $16 cheaper than the Duo?? What am I missing here?

@BCA BAndit, there is a thread in here that quotes the price cuts and phased out CPU's. Some of which you have mentioned. I would take a looksee and then decide on what you may want to purchase. The E8400 and the E7200 are a great choice for C2D and the Q6600 is a fantastic choice for C2Q. Also, as mentioned by Winterpool, Nehalem will be released. Refer to his post as prices are not available just yet.
