How much weight have you lost from running?

Starting next week I will be off work for a month and I want to take advantage of that time to lose weight. So tonight I plan on beginning my first run, I will run everyday afterwards in the morning and do some extra cardio in the evenings (eliptical, jumping rope, etc..).

So for the runners out there what's the best way to get up to speed as a new runner?
How much weight have you lost since you started running?

I'll still continue to use it, but it's really boring for long sessions

i'm trying to motivate myself to get up early in the mornings to run, but it never seems to work out. (i.e. i never get up and run). make sure you have motivation first.

Take it easy at first. If you hurt yourself when you're starting out, you may not be able to run again for the rest of your vacation.

You will lose more weight and look/feel better if you add some resistance training in your routine. Im not gonna go into a long winded post about this because I feel like I write the same stuff over and over.

Also, I believe diet is 80% of the big picture and exercise is 20%.

Hope this helps.

FTW! I hate running, still do it sometimes, but I read a book on the elliptical machine. Do about 30 minutes every time I go and the time passes so quickly. I couldn't stand doing elliptical for that long without something to distract me

Couch to 5k Plan FTW!!!

I'll be starting that back up after my last exam EVAR! Last year I only made it to Week 7 but that combined with better eating and golf and swimming helped me lose 12 pounds in 7 weeks. Of course, when football season started up I gained it all back eating a pound of wings and a pitcher of beer every weekend 🙁.

ftw! It's a lot easier to bulk up first and then lose the weight, than to do it the other way around. If you've been inactive for a while, you'd probably be suprised at how little muscle you have under the flab.

Also, diet won't matter much at first, going from inactive to a regular exercise routine, you'll lose weight in pretty much any case. But if you don't fix your diet the weight loss will plateau pretty quickly, so it's better just to start now, if only to start building the good habits for when you'll really need them.

I almost weighed 200, I then weighed 138 a few months after. I was so dangerously thin that I had to start putting more in my diet.

I went from 165 at the beginning of the year to 140 now. That's with running and lifting, so I've put on muscle weight. Total weight lost is probably close to 30 pounds, or so.

You don't lose much weight with weight training.

This is not true. If your diet is in place and you lift with good form then your lean mass will increase. This will increase your metabolism.

Cardio is a great supplement to weight training and Ill always do it.

don't run everyday. not at first...

Agreed, you WILL burn yourself out within two weeks. Every other day increasing distance everytime. Do other cardio, weights etc.

I wouldn't say that. Last summer I started doing some running (30-40 minutes treadmill daily) and it wasn't so bad. I stuck at it for over a month (before going back to college, and we all know how that goes...). If you're very out of shape, then don't push to hard every day. But if you're in reasonable shape, I think a moderate amount of daily running is just fine.

Agreed. Better on your ankles, shins, knees, hips and lower back. And you can easily get as good of a session.
