This link reports that a person should drink 1/2-ounce of water per day per pound of body weight if you are inactive (see Staley8's post above), and 3/4-ounce of water per day per pound of body weight if you are active.

I would consider myself active since I lift weights 3 times per week and run about 6-9 miles per week on top of that. Therefore, since I weight 215 lbs, I should be drinking 215 x 0.75 = 161 ounces per day. Granted, I don't get that much on a daily basis, but I do shoot for at least a gallon (128 ounces).

I don't disagree with you that you get some water from the foods you eat, but saying there is no need for more than 100 ounces per day doesn't agree with what the majority of those in the health field are advocating.

BS. I haven't had 8 glasses of pure water in the past 2 months total. I almost never drink pure water. I'm not dead, and I bet I'm in better shape than 95% of the general population.

Apple juice is water, milk is water, an orange is water, unless it's burnt to charcoal even a beef patty is water.

This is the problem. Some body decides people should drink a certain amount of water, should cut out certain fat, should avoid salt etc etc and people do it. Then they start believing that if you don't drink 8 glasses of pure water a day you'll have health problems. Use some common sense people. Eat what you want, exercise some and you'll be fine.

Drinking a gallon of water a day is useless, but some people think they're healthy because they sit around and drink water all day.

Ok I think some people need to reread some of the newer guidelines concerning water intake. When things say high amounts of water intake(something like 80 ounces) that means total H20 intake. That does not mean drink 10 8oz. glasses of water. Most people get up to half of their water from the foods they eat. With the exception of a person doing some extreme exercising or physical labor, almost no one would ever want to drink 100 oz. of water a day.

That's completely untrue.

umm no.

Small excerpt: That report said the body needs about 1 milliliter of water for each calorie consumed - almost 8 cups for a typical 2,000-calorie diet - but that "most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods.

There is no way you eat enough food to make up most of 8 cups.

The fact is that not all nutrients necesary for the body are synthesizable[sic]. Vitaman D can be synthesized, but what about Lithium, vitamin C etc...?

Basically, you NEED certain nutrients. After you take the necesary aamount of those, then yes, you are correct.
Eat what you want, exercise some and you'll be fine.

Correct, but for people who weigh 200+ lbs, this is a good number to shoot for. As others have, said, drinking 1/2 oz. of water for every pound of body weight is definitely not a requirement, but it IS a very good number.

Drinking water has many health benefits, but the obvious thing is that it will keep you full and you will eat less throughout the day. I know whenever I get hungry, drinking water helps curtail hunger pangs.

Me too. At least 4 glasses with both meals + whatever else I drink during the day (20-40 more ounces). Don't forget that you can get a lot of water through the food you eat as well, so 8 actual glasses per day isn't always necessary.

I find it hard to believe that you can calculate your necessary intake that easily. I would think that other variables would have to be factored in, like: climate, Distance above sealevel, etc. I drink about 4 bottles of water a day but probably don't get enough exercise

I swear water is an upper. When I drink over a gallon of pure water in a day, i'm wired as hell to the point that I can't sleep sometimes.

yeah, 8 oz of orange juice has over 100 calories, so that adds up quick.

ROFL... I know some people that eat like that. In junior high, I had a friend that would drink 2l of mountain dew every day - and that was all he drank. He hardly ever slept (maybe 2 hours a night).
