This link reports that a person should drink 1/2-ounce of water per day per pound of body weight if you are inactive (see Staley8's post above), and 3/4-ounce of water per day per pound of body weight if you are active.
I would consider myself active since I lift weights 3 times per week and run about 6-9 miles per week on top of that. Therefore, since I weight 215 lbs, I should be drinking 215 x 0.75 = 161 ounces per day. Granted, I don't get that much on a daily basis, but I do shoot for at least a gallon (128 ounces).
I don't disagree with you that you get some water from the foods you eat, but saying there is no need for more than 100 ounces per day doesn't agree with what the majority of those in the health field are advocating.
