how much water in the intake before damage?

so it's raining right now, and I have no intake resonator. The air inlet is angled downward and sits right at the seam of the hood and the fender. Is this a problem??

Also, on many sporty cars (WRX, evolution), it seems like the intake pipe to the filter is very short and faces the front. It seems like some water could get in, but the factory doesn't seem to think this is a problem??

It depends on combustion chamber size and compression ratio. You're fine though. You couldn't hydro lock an engine in the conditions you're describing if you tried. Hell, take your hood off and you still couldn't lock it.

You basically would have to submerge the entire intake pipe in order to get hyrdo lock. A little water won't do much. Just remember, puddles are the enemy.

yeah, hydrolock takes a big splash into the intake or submerging the whole thing. So I guess it can take a little bit of water in there with out problems huh?

Whatever water gets sucked up is a small amount IMHO. Most will just drip back out.

Here's a funny situation....

I have a MiniCooper S (Supercharged). Every time I take it through a carwash it 'smokes' from the 'hoodscoop' that feeds into the supercharger. I have had two people stop me and tell me my car is on fire

. I politely say 'yep' and move on.

I've had a cold air intake modification on my car for 2 years and I have driven it into puddles that seem over a foot deep. I haven't even come close to hydrolocking yet and doubt I will. You have to drive your car in flood conditions for that to happy or just be plain stupid.
