How much water are you supposed to drink? Does it change with height and weight?

So, I believe the recommended amount of water to drink in a day is 8 cups? I would assume if you were a smaller person you would drink less, and a bigger person would drink more? I'm 6 feet tall and 190, how many cups should I be drinking?

😕

i always heard 8 glasses as opposed to an exact measurement like 8 cups. but i would think bigger people require more.

the guideline i use is drinking more when i go to the bathroom and it is no longer clear.

funny you should bring that up. I have always heard 8 "glasses" of water a day. While I'm sure this is more than adequate, my new years resolution is to drink 4 liters a day. I know that sounds like a bit much, but it is manageable and I always feel a lot better. I used to do this when I was more into weight lifting and training in college...but I've slacked off over the last few years that I've been out. Trying to get back into the swing of things, and I'm not regretting it.

As gross as it sounds; you can easily tell if you are getting enough water by looking at the color of your urine.

It should be very clear. Or, if you are taking a LOT of vitamens it should be bright yellow (basically you are pissing them out). If it's dark yellow, you aren't getting enough water.

Here's a quick and simple rule to get your minimum amount of water. Take your weight in pounds, divide it by two. Now that number is the number of ounces of water you should drink in a day MINIMUM.

POP QUIZ: I have to drink 95oz of water, how much do I weigh? Bonus: Is that more or less than a gallon? ---- You can do it kids

if you die from dehydration you drank to little.
if you die from renal failure you drank to much.
if you haven't died your doing just fine.

Uh. The recommended amount is 64oz. With that spread throughout the day. Most drs will tell you if you eat enough fruit and veggies 48oz should be plenty to stay hydrated. There is no need to drink more than 64oz unless you workout alot, or work in the heat.

Or have stones.

as Stanley 8 said plus an additional amount equaling the amount of caffeinated beverages you drink daily as they are bad and cause dehydration

So let me get this straight, if you pee is clear; then you are drinking enough water? Sh!t, I drank so much water today and I pissed like no tommorow. Been drinking A LOT since I've been working out and have been on a healthy diet.

If the doctor hangs another bag of lactated ringer into your other arm, and has the nurses give both bags a good squeeze, you haven't been drinking enough water.

Drink as much as you can. I drink 2 gallons a day, and I'm still thirsty..due to diet, of course. I gotta piss all the time, but its worth it.

I don't think I've ever drunk more than 3 glasses of liquid per day (dunno how many cups are in the glass, but I'd estimate 1.2) and my piss is almost always yellow. I always assumed piss is normally yellow. have I just been wrong my entire life? is piss most often clear? for me if it's clear, it's a strange occurance

also, isn't it bad to drink a ton of water because it leaches the vitamins out?

According to what I have read in quite a few places, it is 1/2 oz per lb of weight.

Basically yeah you've been wrong your entire life 🙂 Generally people use urine color as a first level indicator of hydration. Other than first thing in the morning I have white because I drink generally 3 or so liters (3/4 of a gallon) of fluids/day.

You can over hydrate if you are taking in way too much water (you'd basically have to try to overdo it, or have polydipsia) and it will lower your salt levels. It can be critical, but drinking up to a gallon/day is going to be only healthy. Not sure what you'd need to start causing harm but I would think it would be at least 2 gallons day.

To answer the original question clearly an increase in weight - more than height - would be important as an indicator of liquid content. A 3 year old doesn't need as much as a 350 lber.

wow..that sucks. so what have stunted because of lack of water all my life?

Water weighs 8lbs a gallon and there are 128 ounces in a gallon. Drinking more water should add weight but it's water weight which is good (fat is the bad weight.) Most of those quicky infomercial diets do nothing more than dehydrate you to shed pounds (but your clothes won't fit any better.)
