How much voltage and heat can Opteron Processors handle?

title says it all.

since opteron's are made for servers, i heard theyre made to handle more stress, so can they handle more heat and voltage?

whats a safe limit for both vcore and temperature for opteron processors for air cooling?

I just installed an opteron 165 and had it up on desk so my zalman resorator was not getting water to it. I noticed the temp at 77c before I did anything about it and it seemed to running fine. Now I have my system back on the floor and it is running at 30c where I like it.

I have only used intel cpus until now so I don't really no how to begin overclocking this chip. I don't want to push the limits, just get it above 2.0ghz is all. Does anyone now what the memory and OC settings should be for a mild overclock with no voltage increases?

No one can really tell you what the maximum limits are except the engineers over at AMD. From my experience as a chip designer though, engineers usually give a 0.2V leeway for their CMOS technologies. That gives you a maximum of 1.6V Vcore before breakdown voltage occurs.

I'd say don't go over about 15% vcore, so 1.55 to 1.6 would be my max. I run my x2 at like 1.425 and its fine. Temp sensor is borked though. says I'm running at 68C with a TT bigtyphoon and 28C mobo temp. Hell, its run all the way up to 90C suppposedly with out crapping out when I forgot to open a window (steam heat in apartment= OMGWTFPWNED)

I realise this thread has gone stale but as I'm a newbie to this forum, I thought I'd try an existing thread before starting one of my own.

My issue is that I am unable to overclock my Opty 144 to reasonably high speeds without pushing the vcore right up to 1.65 (fluctuating up to 1.68v at idle and dropping to 1.62v under load). That's a higher voltage than any other overclock I've read on the web and it worries me that I have gone too high and will eventually get a burn out. Temps are good due to the Freezer Pro and lots of case fans: 34-35 idle, 47-49 under load. At this vcore the max HTT that is Prime95 stable is still only 289MHz.

So what's the thinking, drop the HTT & lower the voltage, or keep it cooking at the current voltage? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I think you were unlucky to not get a High o/cing cpu but its definitely not worth pumping up the voltage to such dangerous levels. You will start seeing sideeffects pretty soon at such voltages even if your temps stay in the safe range. My advice lower to 10-15% of stock and get max juice out of the cpu.

Aye, its just my luck with this new system. The GTO isnt taking the X850 XT PE speeds either. Got a vga cooler coming to fix that hopefully.

So my max vcore should be 15% of 1.4v = 1.61v?

Are the fluctuations I'm seeing between 1.62 and 1.68 normal or is my psu not up to the job?

If the PSU were the problem, it would prob be rebooting.. Fluctuation is most likely caused by poor regulation on the MOBO..

I'm afraid you are probably right. Epox dont seem to making boards like they used to. You get what you pay for at the end of the day. I went for cheap when all the recommendations on mobos say otherwise.

Anyway, I lowered the vcore 0.05v to 1.6v & dropped HTT in 1MHz increments until I could get Prime95 stable. 286MHz seems to be my max - ran 8 hours Prime stable last night. That's still a high vcore I guess so I'll try dropping it some more & see how much HTT I have to loose.

Incidentally, what is the recommended voltage for the nForce4 chipset when OCing? I have left mine at the default 1.5v.
