Looking at tiered plans for my fiancee in Gainesville, FL. Most taxing thing she'll be doing is Netflix, and since the cox guy I talked to said no data cap, this is the only thing I really need to worry about.

Tier 1: 3MB down, 768KB up (42.99/no--I know, redonk)

Tier 2: 18MB down, 2MB up (54.99/mo)

Never had this issue, since gaming necessitates a little higher up and down speeds, but just how low can I get away with before she notices a slow internet connection?

Thanks guys.

Netflix's website says that for dvd quality, I need 3MB dl speeds. Is this generally people's experience as well? Or are they over/undershooting it?

3mb sounds reasonable, your max speed will be 12mb/s anyway due yo tour internal connections so the only increase in speed will be getting data to your house, not in it.

I think the 3Mb could be cutting it close, I guess if the $12/mo isn't an issue I would go with the 18/2.

Okay just fired up Transformers 3 on Netflix on our Media Center. Initial buffering runs all the way up to the 8-9 Mb range, but settles down to about 1.5-2Mb/s.

When I had 3Mbs my netflix would constantly switch between hd and regular quality and would pause, think every couple minutes doing it. So if you can get like 4mbs somewhere at least get that.

Looks like I can get 6 down, 512kb up from ATT for 19.95/mo, no contract for a year. Just have to buy a modem (would have to anyway, so no biggie), and it sounds like that would be plenty. Plus, it's way cheaper than Cox's raping prices.

Dont confuse mb with MB, mb is megabits which is a min of 3 you need, the more the better. MB is megabytes.
