How much to register a domain name?

I was just in a tech committee meeting for my school. Someone mentioned registering a new domain name which we'll host on our own server. Our local experts said it would cost $200 to register it. I said I thought you could get them registered for about $10 or $20. They explained that it's more for a business to register the name, vs. a private individual.

Average is from 6.95 (ev1) to $30 (register.com = crap) I highly recommend namecheap.com where it costs $8.88

AFAIK, you can register a domain with anyone you want to, so the price should be around $8 / year.
