two of my college friends are getting married in a couple months. I just got the invite today. Because they're moving to the left coast right after the wedding, they requested gift certificates and cash instead of actual gifts.

What would you say is an appropriate amount to give? This is my first wedding since my aunt got married (when I was 12 ;)), so I'm not quite sure what kind of standards there are on this sorta stuff.

That's right. I usually give $100 - $200, depending on how close we are.

100 is pretty good, hopefully covering the price for your plate at the party. if you bring a guest give more if you can.

It depends HIGHLY on your location and set of friends. In many places, even your closest relatives won't give more than $50 and a typical gift is $20. In other locations anything under $100 is considered an insult.

Thus we cannot answer your question.

Minimum of $50 ($100 if you bring a guest). That should cover the food cost. Bump it to $75 a person if you are close.

I find it interesting to see so many people saying $100 + guests. I've always heard $50 if they're close friends/family (and have found that fairly consistent with what other people give), otherwise $25 or thereabouts.

That is why I said it depends strongly on where you live.

Yeah, I always give at least $100, although judging by my wedding $25 for a friend of the family it typical, and around $50-$100 from closer friends and family.

I wonder what factors contribute to it, though. I live in Seattle and the weddings I've attended have typically been for people in their late 20s to mid 30s with household incomes of 60-100k/yr, so it wouldn't seem to be just an economic thing.

I gave my bro $1,000.

Close friends deserve a few hundred bucks.

Acquaintances maybe a hundred.

Weddings cost a grip!!!!!

When catered meals are $5 per plate what do you give?

$50/person is the bare minimum i think. That is if you barely know the guy and he invited you. If you know the guy, then the amount depends on how close you are.

Wow, I never knew that I've been underpaying my friends and family all this time...we normally give about $25 to our relatives, but we ARE just getting started out and all that.

I feel like such an asshat now.
