$100 to $200 depending on how close you are, how much per plate.

When catered meals are $5 per plate what do you give?

my fiancee and i have been looking for a month now (we still have over a year before the big day) and the cheapest we've found is running about $12 a head!

PM me if you read this, please.

Wow, I never knew that I've been underpaying my friends and family all this time...we normally give about $25 to our relatives, but we ARE just getting started out and all that.

I feel like such an asshat now.

OMG! 12$?!?! ARE YOU KIDDING?!
Our per head is around 67$!

Yup 5 and 12 is mighty cheap

mine is about $160-170, but that's including table rentals, chairs, utensils etc.
Some people are looking to blow their life savings on one meal. Others are looking to have a great evening with good food. Still others are looking for the cheapest place possible.

I spend a total of $7000-$8000 on everything wedding related (rings + church + decorations + flowers + reception + etc) for 200 guests. $160 * 200 guests = you spending $32,000 on 45 minutes of your life (what I'd guess the eating time of the reception is). We just must have completely different goals.

we dont have different goals. :) I amlucky enough for my father to pay a good amount of the wedding reception. actually, we are getting married in Hawaii and having a reception back in Michigan for all those that are not going with us.

To some, weddings are important! Thats all. Also, it depends greatly what part of the country youre in!
Here in MI, 50$ is average, but in larger cities, $170 is the norm!

My wife and I gave $100 to a good friend of mine over the summer. Anything around there is fine. I seriously doubt anyone would be insulted with a gift of $50 or more unless you are family and/or make serious bank.

I do resent the implied statement that weddings aren't important to me. You can have a great wedding with $5 self-made table decorations (what I did). Just as great as $10,000 purchased table decorations (what my cousin did). In fact, I feel the home-made decorations were even more special than some artsy florist's decorations. Amount of money spent does not equal the importance of a wedding or the memories of the day.

Dullard, i feel the exact same way you do. However, my wife wants to have a nice wedding, since it has been a dream of hers. all i know is that i do not want to get in the way of having the wedding the way she wants it only to have her bitch and moan about it later. also, even my dad tells me to let her have what she wants and he'll help us out with the bill. but yea, you are correct, spending that amount of money to have a nice 5 hours is insane.

i never meant to say or imply that a wedding was not important to you. I am doing alot of handmade stuff as well. I am making 75% of everything myself. The price i stated was for a dinner.
You are truly correct when you say amt of money spent does not equal the feelings of the day or the meaning of it.

I am used to guys on here jump down others throats when they say they spend more than a few bucks for a wedding.
Trust me, we are on a tight budget as well and hope to have a house and no debt from just one day.

thanks for the PM dullard...

I feel bad for you guys that are getting stuck with the $150+/head receptions. Personally, my fiancee and I (yes, we've discussed it) feel that spending THAT much is a waste, but if you can afford it and it'll make your day special, go for it.

Since we're paying for everything but the dress, cheap is a necessity. Thankfully, my whole family is cheap, so they won't care much...

Good luck to everyone!
