WTF?! You charge someone for that? It involves hitting a few keys and watching tv while it installs

If he has to go out of his way to do it, and they're not family or friends, then yeah, i would charge too.

30-40/hr. Depends if it includes backing up any files and reinstalling/config software and hardware too.

I'll give some more info- this was a Compaq, with one of those God awful restore disks, that not only installed a bunch of useless crap I had to take off, but also neglected to install Word or several other useful programs that came with it, and also neglected to install any drivers except for the video card. It was much more involved than having to hit a few keys and was a royal pain in my ass. The real kicker was, I needed to backup some stuff off the previous install, WinME (which was on it) was so fubared it wouldn't load, so I tried to install Win98 (only OS CD I have) over it and it would crash due to some ACPI weirdness. I then tried putting another HD in there to just copy everything before formatting it, and the lovely Compaq Bios wouldn't even recognize the new drive.

I charge 10 bucks an hour... shouldnt take you more than 2 or 3 hours to get everything reinstalled though... 40 bucks is alot for reinstalling stuff..... and spend most of that time watching tv or playing games on your computer.

That's not enough - I'd say at least $25/hr. if you're feeling nice.

tech-support is the real kicker. I'll never buy or install anything for someone unless they honestly pay me for it. fooling around with old computer isn't as fast/easy as you thought it would be especially when the owner knows jack sh|t about computers. Chances are you'll discover more problems as you jump into any computer thats has been pre-configured/built.

i charge $65/hr per call. most of clients are fairly intuitive, so if they call me, i know it's serious.

You don't reformat many computers, do you?

I charge anywhere from $25-50 typically, depending on how much software needs to be reinstalled, how much data needs to be rescued first, etc.

if that's all it takes for you to rebuild a machine, I'd have to say you screwed up somewhere.
